All Mixed Up!
This week Gan Bet encountered several parashiyot; Bereishit from last Shabbat and Noach from this coming Shabbat. To experience the "real" Beginning, before anything was created by Hashem, we tried to experience the notion of "Tohu Va'Vohu." The children were blindfolded at their choosing and challenged to perform different tasks around the classroom. Their giggles and shrieks could be heard as they bumped, thumped, and stumbled around, their hands reached out in front of them to find their way. When they removed their blindfolds, they had truly experienced going from chaos, to the gift of light. As a follow-up activity, we did "Tohu Va'Vohu" painting by dipping marbles in paint and allowing them to roll around and collide on paper. The children can truly appreciate the purpose and order to the things around them after such hands-on experiences!

Learning About Parshat Noach
Parshat Noach gave the children of Ganon Gimmel many wonderful learning opportunities.  After looking at all the beautiful colors in the rainbow we took time to learn all about primary and secondary colors.  The children loved experimenting with the primary colors and were delighted to see many secondary colors emerge.  In addition, the classrooms were filled with all the colors of the rainbow when the children dressed in all the colors during "rainbow week".
How was Noach's tevah able to float when it was so heavy?  This was a question that was posed to the children.  We discovered that an item can float when its molecules are not densely packed together. When they are closely packed together, an item will sink.  We selected items from around the classroom and tested them to see if they would float or sink.
As the song goes, "the animals they came on by twosies."  This led to talking about pairs.  The children had a great time looking for and finding pairs around the classroom as well as on themselves.
Finally, all children in ECD had a terrific time when the petting zoo came to Yavneh. The children loved petting, feeding and posing with all the animals that came to visit.  Click here for photos!

Connecting with Global Read Aloud Friends
The students of 2C are back into the swing of things after the long Sukkot break!  We are excited to be connecting with our Global Read Aloud friends across the country using a variety of technology, such as, Flipgrid, Padlet and Google Slides.  Fenway and Hattie  by Victoria J. Coe, is a story told from the point of view of Fenway the dog.  Fenway names people and places using "dog language."  The students had a wonderful time creating a Padlet in which they had to think like Fenway the dog and what he might name people and places in Yavneh Academy.  We cannot wait to share our Padlet with other classes throughout the U.S. and see what they come up with!

Fourth Graders Begin Learning Navi!
We are excited to announce that Yavneh's 4th graders have begun their study of Neviim. This week we started learning Sefer Yehoshua, the first of the books of the Prophets. As the story opens Yehoshua is assuming the leadership of the nation, a month after Moshe passes away. It is the beginning of Bnei Yisrael's journey into the Land of Israel, fulfilling the promise which Hashem made to Avraham in Sefer Bereishit. Yehoshua is encouraged by the words of Hashem, Chazak VeEmatz!
We wish the 4th graders much Hatzlacha as they embark on their journey.

Middle School

"How Many Drops of Water Can Each Side of a Penny Hold?"
The 6th grade students observed a penny, generated a hypothesis, and conducted an experiment to see which side of a penny can hold more water. After analyzing their data, students communicated their results in the form of a bar graph.

Mitzvah Day Collection Drives and Programs
Please help us assist those who lost so much in the recent hurricanes.  Beginning October 23rd, our 6th graders will be collecting new and used children's books for the Chabad of St. Maarten while our 8th graders will be collecting new clothing (for all ages) for the Chabad of Puerto Rico. Our students will also be in the building November 5th, during the YPAA Lower School Breakfast, to continue gathering the many products needed by St. Maarten and Puerto Rico.
As has become our tradition, we will also have a group of 7th grade students joining residents at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh to work on Arts and Crafts projects and engage in Bingo.
Be on the lookout for pictures and updates.
