SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

Edwin Adum

What are you interested in studying in college? I honestly don't know what I want to study in college.  At the moment, I'm thinking of pre-med or aviation.  I love to fly around the world and visit different countries to experience different cultures.

What has been the best part of senior year so far?
The best thing about senior year is knowing that it's my last year in high school.

What will you miss about high school?
I will miss the routine the most.

What are you looking forward to in college? More challenging courses and independence.
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Mr. Ed Barnett

What advice would you give a high school senior? A quote by Calvin Coolidge is good advice to achieve your goals..."Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb... Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent."

What are your hobbies? Listening to and playing music, motorcycling, beach activities, playing with my five grandchildren, and reading.

Who is your favorite athlete of all-time? John Riggins, a Washington Redskins football legend

What is your current/ past career? Please describe your career journey. My career has involved many related types of jobs, all involving computers: application developer, systems engineer, project manager, and technical sales manager. I graduated from college with a B.A. in Psychology and immediately went to work for the U.S. Government, where I was trained and worked as an application developer for nine years. I then accepted a position at IBM Corporation and worked there in application development and technical sales for 33 years before retiring in June 2016.

MAXIMIZE WINTER BREAK

It's tempting to unplug during the entire Winter Break, but it is one of the best times to focus on your college process.  Here's how:
  • Make progress on your college applications - If you have upcoming deadlines in January and February, work on your applications during break.  It's much less stressful when you have time to focus.
  • Visit campuses - Some colleges may be open while you are off from school.  Go to your college campuses! Get a feel for the environment, talk to current students, take a campus tour.
  • Apply for scholarships - Use the extra time to look for and apply for scholarship money.  Every penny counts!
  • Double check to ensure you've submitted supplements - Check your email and application portals to ensure your colleges have all the materials needed to apply (essays, letters of recommendation, test scores, a copy of your FAFSA, etc.)
  • Say thanks - Your teachers and counselors have taken the time to write your letters of recommendation.  Take a moment to write a note to them expressing your gratitude.

ALL ABOUT THE CSS PROFILE

The College Scholarship Service (CSS) Profile is an online application, hosted by The College Board, that students use to apply for non-federal financial aid.

Almost 400 colleges and universities require students to submit a CSS Profile in order to be considered for grants and scholarships.  Each college has a different deadline for completion of the CSS Profile.  Deadlines can be found on each college's financial aid website.

The CSS Profile requires detailed information from students and families in order to be completed.

Only SOME colleges require the CSS Profile.
Click here to see which colleges require it.

Here's a detailed intro to the CSS Profile.
