You may have noticed the work going on in the Library. We are proud to announce that the work in the vestibule will be completed soon, and we will have a fully renovated space thanks to the generous work of the Somers Library Foundation. Thank you again!
 
The Somers Library will be at the Celebrate Somers event on September 9th.  If you need a library card, have any question or concerns, or just want to find out what is happening at the Library, please stop at our table. We look forward to seeing our patrons in the beautiful weather.

Luminate Your Brain Through Optimal Nutrition. Friday September 8 at 1pm. Do you remember what you ate for breakfast this morning? Trouble concentrating at work? Fear that your family history of Alzheimer's might be your fate? Experiencing a decline in mental function can significantly impact your quality of life. And, although you can't change your family history, this lecture provides participants with the latest information on the mechanism behind brain health and the foods that simultaneously feed your body, fuel your brain maximize your cognitive health.  
 
Concert: The New Cambridge Trio at the Somers Library. Sunday, September 10, 2 - 4 pm. Alice Miller, Flute - Tony Coretto, Piano - Marcel Villaflor, Double Bass. Jazz up your Sunday with The New Cambridge Trio performance of the Bolling Suite #2 for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio at the Somers Library! Alice Miller, flute, is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music and was a member of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra for nine seasons; pianist Tony Coretto performs as both a pianist and singer throughout the Westchester area; and Marcel Villaflor, bass, performs with the Yonkers Philharmonic, Chappaqua Orchestra and the Croton Choral Society. Composer Claude Bolling was born in Cannes, France on  April 10, 1930. Space is limited, no registration required, first come, first served.
 
Breathing Techniques and Meditation to Reduce Stress. Thursday, September 14, 6:00 - 7:30 pm. Learn how you can use the tools of meditation and breath to take you to a calm and centered mind and gain access to an unlimited storehouse of energy. This seminar will help you:  Eliminate Stress,  Relax the Body and Calm the Mind,  Increase Energy, Clarity and Focus,  Enhance Physical, Mental and Emotional Well Being,  Experience Peace of Mind, Joy and Happiness. Through the power of breath, unlock your deepest potential and bring fullness to life! Join Manjula Khanna as she leads you to a more relaxed way of being. 
 
Social Security Benefits Strategy . Friday September 15 at 1pm at the Somers Library Many Americans think Social Security is simple and straightforward, often it is not. Just recently, the bipartisan budget act made some significant changes to Social Security laws about claiming retirement and spousal benefits. Making a mistake when selecting your benefit option can cost thousands of dollars over the course of retirement. Consequently, it's a good idea to talk with experts in the field, gather the information you need, and make informed benefits decisions. 

Choose Your Retirement Path . Tuesday September 18 at 6pm. What are the challenges you face as you navigate the road to retirement? Learn about the cost of living, outliving your retirement savings, taxes, expenses, and expectations vs. reality.
 
Fall Into Art . Mondays September 18, 25, October 2, 16, 23.  The changing seasons, and our color palette is changing COLORS! Join us and start looking at your art through different lenses... Bring your colored pencils, your paints, watercolors, or whatever you create with, & let's make something new for FALL! $30 instructor fee paid at the first class. 

Decorating Your Home to Sell. Monday September 18 from 6-7:30pm. You'll learn the top ten tried-and-true Do-It-Yourself home staging tips, what home buyers really want, the current climate of the Northern Westchester Real Estate Market, and how today's home sellers can edge our the competition. 

Alan Sklar Reads The Case of Four and Twenty Blackbirds . Friday September 22 at 1pm. Little Jack Horner (a private detective) is approached by a blonde who claims to be Jill Dumpty, Humpty's sister. She wants Horner to find Humpty's murderer. Apparently he did not just fall from the wall...he was pushed! Come as listen to Alan Sklar read this hilarious tale, written by Neil Gaiman.
  
We the Poets: Poetry Workshop for Adults. Thursdays, 9/28, 10/5, 10/12, 12/19, 10/26, 11/2, 11/9, 11/16, 11/30, 12/7, 12/14, 12/21, 12/28, 11:00 am - 12:30 pm. Beginner and experienced poets "will hold these truths to be self-evident" that all poems can be created using trial and error, serendipity along with learning the processes of craft in this poetry workshop. Discover your muse as Thea Schiller will introduce an established poem, lead a discussion an create in class writing exercises with time allotted to write and share each week. Participating members will be encouraged to expand their repertoire of poems.
 
Ongoing Events 
 
Coloring Book Club for Adults. Relax, color, socialize - all for free at Somers Library! Materials are provided, or bring your own colored pencils and coloring books (recommended.) Registration is not required; meetings will be held in the conference room every Friday from 10:30-12:30. 
   
Westchester Writers. 6:30pm on the first, third and fifth Thursday of each month in the program room. Join a safe, supportive, and creative environment to share literary works in progress. This is not a writing class, but rather an ongoing group of writers offering assistance to its members who are looking to improve their writing skills through positive feedback and helpful critiques. Beginners as well as experienced writers over the age of 18 are welcome.

Anime Club - This club meets every Wednesday starting 9/13 from 3:00-4:30 pm. Join us for a chance to watch anime from Crunchyroll with your friends! 

Teen/Tween Pokemon Club -  Join us at the Somers Library to meet, discuss and battle your friends using your Nintendo 3DS (or even using your cards)!   This program is for teens/tweens in grades 5th and up. Meeting dates are Fridays on the following dates:  9/15, 9/29, 10/27, 11/3, 11/17, 12/1, & 12/15 from 3:15-4:30. Please register. 

Anime Nights! - Meets Friday 4:30-6:30 pm on 8/4. Join us for a chance to watch anime from Crunchyroll with your friends. 
 
Teen Debate Workshop at the Somers Library - Fridays 9/15, 9/29, 10/6, 10/27, & 11/3 from 3:30 - 4:45 pm. For 6th graders and above! Please register.

SAT Practice Exam - Saturday, September 16, 2017 from 10:00 am-2:00 pm. Please register.

ACT Practice Exam: Saturday, September 23rd from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. Please register.

How to Write a Great Application Essay:  Wednesday, September 20th @ 6:00 pm - Get a head start on writing your college essay before applications are due! Join us at the Somers Library for this informative workshop. Seating is limited. This program is intended for high school juniors and seniors.  Parents are also welcome to attend. Please register.

Setting Your Clock for Success: Time Management Workshop for Students Grades 6-12 - Thursday, September 28 from 7-9 pm.  In this workshop, master teacher and President of Crimson Coaching™, an elite tutoring firm serving Westchester, Dr. Dominique Padurano teaches students techniques for managing their time to complete assignments and achieve long-term goals.  She also guides parents through how to effectively monitor and assist their children at home.  Students must be accompanied by a parent and should bring a notebook and a pen or pencil. Please register.

StoryWalk returns August 21-Sept 2!    Diary of a Worm  by Doreen Cronin will be posted around the exterior of the library. Come into the library during hours and receive a cookie for completing the storywalk. Cookies are provided courtesy of Friends of Somers Library.

Bits and Pieces

New addition to our maker kits: You can now borrow coloring
books from the library! Color pages with crayons, colored pencils or gel pens (you supply.) Sign you work (optional.) Leave the pages you worked on in the book. When the book is full, it will be displayed in the library and used as an example during our adult coloring book programs.

Flowers
: The flowers that you see at the library are sponsored by the Friends of Somers Library and donated by local businesses. We thank Mary Ward from Houlihan Lawrence for donating this month's flower arrangement.

Artist: Our featured artist this month is Kenton Gomez. Kenton
  is a wildlife photographer specializing in the Birds and Mammals of North America.  His work has been featured on CBS News, The Weather Channel, and various print and online resources.  Raised in Westchester County, Kenton currently resides in Riverdale, Bronx.  His work can be seen at www.kentongomez.com.
