FALL 2017
Voices Raising Voices - New CASA Volunteer Story on Our New Website
Have you visited our new website yet? You'll want to be sure to check it out! The website has many features, such as videos from CASA volunteers in Georgia, on-demand trainings and resources, upcoming volunteer trainings in the state, ways for you to get involved with the CASA organization and the latest Voices Raising Voices story featuring CASA volunteer Deborah Odom from Alcovy CASA in Covington. We are using Deborah's 'voice' as a CASA volunteer to help raise more 'voices' to advocate for children as CASA volunteers. You can read her story below.

"The advocacy aspect, really being a voice for the child,
spoke to me, because I think if I had a CASA,
my life may have turned out so different
in the years I was in foster care..."

Becoming a CASA was in many ways the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for Deborah Odom of Alcovy CASA in Covington. Having spent time as a child in the foster care system, she was eager to help others in the same circumstances. Deborah had dreamed of going to law school but, as a single mother at seventeen, could not "afford ... that luxury." Grown up and in stable circumstances, she was looking for a way to give back to her community.

Alcovy CASA brought it all together for Deborah at just the right time. Even with her experience and passion, though, she still had much to learn. The CASA training "made me feel much more secure that I could be successful." Once appointed to serve specific children, Deborah found great support and encouragement from CASA staff and "the whole Newton County Juvenile Court System", including judges "who truly love our CASA program."

Almost ten years and over fifty children later, Deborah is as energized as ever to help children find a home. "Everyone wants to feel loved, cared for and wanted," she says. "Everyone wants to know they have one person in their corner that is there for them no matter what. I give every kid that to the best of my ability." And Deborah Odom plans to keep on giving her all for CASA children for as long as life allows...

She often finds that no matter what circumstances these children are in, whether a victim of abuse, neglect or their own unruliness, this is probably one of the hardest times of their lives. She likes knowing that for a brief moment, she is a positive part of their journey and she wants them to know that they have someone standing in their corner no matter what. She reminds them that one day, this will be just a memory and that it does not have to define who they are in the moment or what they will be in years to come.
Update: Statewide Growth Plan
As we near the end of year two of our three-year statewide growth plan, we are excited to announce that for fiscal year 2017 (ending June 30th), over 11,200 children in Georgia were served by over 2,400 CASA volunteers! These statistics represent a 16% increase in children served and a 14% increase in CASA volunteers since the beginning of the growth plan.

The overall goals of the growth plan include increasing the number of children with a CASA volunteer by 10% each year, over three years, for an overall increase of 30% more children being served by a CASA volunteer at the end of the three-year period. The increase would translate into serving 13,000 children with 3,200 CASA volunteers at the end of 2018.

We look forward to sharing more updates in the future as we all work towards providing more CASA volunteers for more children in the state.
October: Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Millions of children nationwide are exposed to domestic violence each year. Exposure to domestic violence has a direct impact on children's emotional and psychological well-being. Domestic violence in the home can be directly related to one reason why children enter foster care. CASA volunteers can be a great resource in helping children who are victims of domestic violence. Additionally, you can support domestic violence victims that you may come in contact with or know personally.

In Georgia, the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence (GCADV) has a 24-hour hotline for domestic violence: 1-800-33-HAVEN (1-800-334-2836). If you, or someone you know, might be a victim of domestic violence, please call the hotline to get help. Numerous domestic violence shelter programs exist in Georgia, and their contact information can be found here. GCADV also offers many trainings and educational materials on domestic violence. Please visit the GCADV website for these resources.

Two CASA volunteers from CASA of the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit (headquartered in Statesboro), John Unkel and Amy Whitehurst, were recently featured by United Way of the Coastal Empire as part of United Way's fundraising campaign. They were spotlighted in campaign materials as well as at live events. Area CASA programs also received publicity as a result.  Read more about the CASA volunteers here.

CASA of the Augusta Judicial Circuit recently conducted their largest class of CASA volunteer candidates with 26 in training! The CASA program implemented several recruitment initiatives prior to the training, including billboards around town.

Staff member Michele Benton with Rockdale CASA in Conyers took homemade banana bread to the Conyers Police Department to thank them for all they do. This simple act was a great way to support the community and market the CASA program!
