The Gift of Self Compassion |
|
The month of giving is upon us! December brings with it the holidays of giving and generosity. While giving gifts to others is what we generally think of as the traditions of this season, I want to call our attention to something equally, and possibly, even more important:
Being generous and compassionate with ourselves.
When we board an airplane and listen to the safety speech, they remind us that in case of an emergency, we should put on our own oxygen mask first
and then assist others. I'm always grateful for that little reminder. The truth is, that we can't give to others if we don't take care of ourselves first. If we are depleted, or ill, we have nothing left to give!
I believe that Self Compassion is (or should be) at the core of our self-care practice.
Dr. Kristin Neff, a pioneer in the field of Self Compassion research, believes that Self Compassion might even be more important to our overall well-being than Self Esteem.

I have been very busy this fall, teaching and speaking. I recently spoke at the OAND Annual Convention on the topic,
"How Biography Becomes Biology: Childhood Trauma and Adult Disease."
I spend a lot of my time giving to others through my doctoring, teaching and mentoring which is my great joy and privilege. As all healers, I sometimes struggle with taking good care of myself.
In the spirit of self-care and self compassion, I am taking a short vacation in Arizona for the first week in December, to indulge a personal passion of mine - playing golf! It is a trip I had to postpone for a year due to my back injury and surgery last November. As difficult as it is to carve out time for myself, I'm practicing what I preach and giving myself the gift of this time to relax, reflect and rejuvenate.
I wish you all a warm and wonderful holiday season! Remember to be generous and loving with yourself as you share with others.
