Jamie is a seven year old kid who, like most children his age, doesn't understand the challenges his family faces. Along with 41% of local kids, Jamie qualifies for free or reduced school lunches. But those food needs don't end when the school bell rings.
Through local member agencies like Hoosier Hills Food Bank, Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, and Community Kitchen, families like Jamie's are able to stretch their budgets further. These agencies work throughout the area to ensure families have enough to eat.
Having enough food isn't the only challenge Jamie's family faces. Robust early learning experiences are critical as 85% of brain growth takes place by the age of 5. While Jamie's parents want their kids to be successful, their work schedules keep them so busy, it can be difficult to actively participate in their children's education.
Member agencies like Monroe County United Ministries and community partnerships like Monroe Smart Start, Let's Read, and Real Men Read work to help all children get the best start in life. These United Way sponsored programs provide early childhood supports like quality childcare and reading programs. And you can help - a donation of $5 a week provides a young, at-risk child with a week of high quality and dependable childcare.
