You are helping Jamie succeed!

Meet Jamie
A donation of $10 a week provides an elementary school student like Jamie with a backpack full of healthy food every weekend.
Jamie is a seven year old kid who, like most children his age, doesn't understand the challenges his family faces. Along with 41% of local kids, Jamie qualifies for free or reduced school lunches. But those food needs don't end when the school bell rings.

Through local member agencies like Hoosier Hills Food Bank, Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, and Community Kitchen, families like Jamie's are able to stretch their budgets further. These agencies work throughout the area to ensure families have enough to eat.

Having enough food isn't the only challenge Jamie's family faces. Robust early learning experiences are critical as 85% of brain growth takes place by the age of 5. While Jamie's parents want their kids to be successful, their work schedules keep them so busy, it can be difficult to actively participate in their children's education.

Member agencies like Monroe County United Ministries and community partnerships like Monroe Smart Start, Let's Read, and Real Men Read work to help all children get the best start in life. These United Way sponsored programs provide early childhood supports like quality childcare and reading programs. And you can help - a donation of $5 a week provides a young, at-risk child with a week of high quality and dependable childcare.

Make your donation today to help kids like Jamie on the path to success.

IU Health Bloomington Hospital
During IU Health's kickoff event, the campaign volunteers held a 'Dollar-an-Inch' contest. Staff members were invited to cut the ties and scarves of hospital leadership and to make a donation to United Way for every inch cut! Thanks to employees for their generous contributions and these leaders for sacrificing a bit of their wardrobe for the cause!

Free Community Tax Service Seeks Volunteers Be a Tax Hero
The Free Community Tax Service, led by United Way of Monroe County, is currently seeking volunteers for the 2017 tax season. Individuals are encouraged to express their interest by December 15, 2016 and can serve at their preferred program sites in Bloomington or Ellettsville (our Spencer site is fully staffed!).

The Free Community Tax Service helps low- and moderate-income residents file federal and state returns for no charge, claim the Earned Income Tax Credit, and receive 100% of their refund quickly and easily. Last year's volunteers helped local residents file over 3,000 tax returns.

Volunteers do not need to have any prior experience with preparing taxes, only a desire to help others. Volunteers will receive complete training and support to become IRS-certified Tax Preparers. Anyone interested in learning more can visit monroeunitedway.org/FreeTaxesVolunteer

Health Care Open Enrollment Starts Now
Starting in November, the Health Insurance Marketplace is available to enroll, re-enroll, review, and change your coverage for 2017. If you do not have insurance through work, Medicaid, Medicare, Hoosier Healthwise, or another qualified plan, you can browse the Marketplace for coverage that fits your needs and budget. Even if you are happy with your current plan, it may no longer be available or your coverage may have changed since last year, so it pays to review your options. You may qualify for credits and premium assistance, but keep in mind people without coverage could face a penalty.

If you have questions or concerns, you can find a list of free, state-certified Navigators who will provide unbiased assistance with enrollment and renewal on our website.
Important dates include:
  • November 1, 2016: Open enrollment begins - this is the first day you may enroll, re-enroll, or change a plan for 2017 through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
  • December 15, 2016: Last day of enrollment for coverage starting on the first of the year.
  • January 31, 2017: Last day to enroll for 2017 coverage through the Marketplace; after this date, you can only enroll or change plans if you qualify for the Special Enrollment Period.

Ready, Set, Grow!

Starting kindergarten is an exciting time, but it can also make kids feel a little nervous. Thanks to our local Kindergarten Countdown camp, children are better prepared to start school ready to succeed.

While this camp offers children valuable social experiences in an academic setting, the main focus is on increasing their readiness to read which is critical for entering kindergarten. During camp every child receives several books to add to his or her personal library.

Throughout the seven week camp, several parent engagement activities were held to help keep parents active and involved. By the end of camp, most parents reported spending at least five hours a week reading with their child and that the children increased their pre-literacy scores.
