SPORT & ENTERTAINMENT MANAGEMENT NAMED FOR VINIKS 
Donations of more than $5 million have resulted in the naming of the Muma College of Business Sport & Entertainment Management program for Tampa Bay Lightning owners Jeff and Penny Vinik, whose organization offers internships and jobs to program students and graduates. Muma College of Business Dean Moez Limayem moderated a panel discussion about the latest trend in business: elevating human resources officers to the C-suite and allowing them input on bottom-line strategies. CHICO'S SHELLEY BROADER: THE NEXT CONVERSATION WITH A CEO
Shelley Broader, president and CEO of Chico's FAS is slated to be the next guest for the popular Conversation with a CEO series hosted by the Muma College of Business. For two years, Broader has been running the clothing and accessories shop that has outlets across the United States, Mexico and Canada. HUNDREDS ATTEND MUMA COLLEGE OF BUSINESS WATCH PARTY
Everybody loves a parade, especially the 2017 USF Homecoming parade. Hundreds of spectators stopped by last week to eat sliders and mashed potatoes, get free T-shirts and chat in the college's atrium and breezeway. The party culminated when the parade, with a Muma College of Business float, passed by drawing cheers from students, faculty and special guests. To see the photo gallery, click here.
FLORIDA SBDC AT USF HELPS BUSINESSES STAY AFLOAT, POST IRMA
Counselors with the Florida Small Business Development Center at USF were busy after Hurricane Irma's visit, fielding applications for bridge loans for companies either physically or economically damaged by the storm. Scores of businesses from a 10-county region were awarded nearly $1 million in government loans to help keep them temporarily afloat. Read more. See news video here.
2017 STATEWIDE HEALTH-CARE PITCH COMPETITION FULL OF BULLS
One pitch is for a virtual personal assistant for the elderly, another is a ride-share app for the disabled. There's even an idea for a home-care robot. These are all pitches to be delivered at the Florida Blue Innovation Pitch Competition this month in Orlando. BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA MOVES ON ADVICE FROM UNDERGRADS
Muma College of Business students from the Fall 2017 case competition will share recommendations for improving sagging participation with the leadership council of the Boy Scouts of America. Their ideas include upgrading scouting websites and social media pages, tweaking the HR department and updating annual dues. Learn more. 
LECTURERS REVEAL THE FUTURE OF SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
Three industry thought leaders addressed a crowd of about 350 at the Vinik Sport & Entertainment Management Program's fifth annual lecture series. Tim Leiweke, CEO of Oak View Group; Jeff Wilpon, COO of the New York Mets: and Brendan Donohue, director of the NBA 2K League, discussed the shifting industry landscapes and what the future holds. DBA PROGRAM DIRECTOR ON THE MEND AFTER BICYCLE WRECK
Matt Mullarkey pedals his bicycle about 30 miles every other day, most often around the sunny, sea-breeze-swept streets near his St. Pete Beach home. But this day in June was different. He was making his way toward Fort DeSoto Park, cruising at about 24 mph, when the world went black. He had struck an SUV that had broken down and pulled into the bike lane. Paramedics got there to find Mullarkey unresponsive and not breathing. After weeks in the hospital, he now faces grueling physical therapy. Read more.
ALUMNA-GENERATED SCHOLARSHIP GAINING MOMENTUM
Last year, Ashley Washington became the youngest alumna to fully fund a business scholarship on her own. It began with her own $5,000 gift and has blossomed through employer and state matches. VIDEO OF THE ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON RELEASED
About $600,000 was awarded to some 250 students at the annual scholarship luncheon held in August. Guest speakers recounted how scholarships in past years kept them in school and led to success in their college life and careers. The atmosphere was captured in words and in photos and now a video is out revealing more of the impactful day. View video. 
FACULTY/STAFF NOTES 
  • Diana Hechavarría, an assistant professor of entrepreneurship, was selected as the recipient of this year's USF Status of Latinos Faculty Award for her accomplishments. She received the award at the USF Hispanic Heritage Celebration Luncheon earlier this month. Hechavarría teaches courses in social and global entrepreneurship for the USF Center for Entrepreneurship.
  • Dipayan Biswas, a professor of marketing, recently accepted an invitation to join the editorial review board of the Journal of Marketing, a premier journal in the discipline. Biswas teaches undergraduate, graduate and PhD-level courses in the sensory and experiential aspects of marketing.
  • Jose Soto, office manager for the Muma College of Business Undergraduate Advising was awarded the USF Status of Latinos Staff Award for his accomplishments. He received the award at the recent USF Hispanic Heritage Celebration Luncheon in October. Soto spearheaded a collection drive for necessities including water, non-perishable goods and personal hygiene products for Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria left the U.S. territory devastated.

  • Jeannie Weaver ('09, Marketing and Management) who works for Linksters, a chain of taprooms, is opening a new craft cocktail bar serving a full range of spirits, coffees, wine and beer in Lakeland.
  • David Breitwieser ('90, Finance) was named managing director and senior portfolio manager at Grove Bank & Trust. He was senior vice president and senior director of portfolio management at BNY Mellon Wealth Management.
  • Derek R. Williams ('00, Finance) president, and Beth Deyo ('05, Finance), vice president, of Williams Wealth Management Group in Manatee County, were honored as the 2017 Manatee Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year.
  • Bernard M. Cohen ('93 MBA) was named vice president of quality at MVP Health Care in New York. He provides strategic and operational oversight of quality management processes for all lines of business at the health insurer. A medical doctor, Cohen has 24 years of experience consulting with the National Committee for Quality Assurance.
  • Angela Cooley ('98, Accounting) was promoted to partner with Markham Norton Mosteller Wright & Co, a public accounting firm in Fort Myers and Naples.
  • Jeremy Wensinger ('89, MBA) is now the chief operating officer at Peraton, a government contractor that serves national security customers. Wensinger previously was at Augusta Management Strategies.

* Jan. 28-30, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, which sets the standard for excellence in business colleges around the globe, will visit the Muma College of Business as part of its five-year re-accreditation process. A peer review team, made up of leaders in other businesses colleges, will examine policies and procedures to determine whether the Muma College of Business will receive its accreditation renewal the next five years.
