Why should I care about "Negative SEO"? (Uh, what is that again?)

If you have a website and you're serious about it, you are -- or should be -- very familiar with the term SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). However, did you know there is such a thing as "Negative SEO"?

Negative SEO is the practise of using unethical techniques to sabotage a competitor's rankings in the search engines. In plain English, it's a new way of cheating to get to the top.

In the past, webmasters would focus on their own websites to get the outcomes they wanted; using methods like "keyword stuffing" to bolster their search result rankings. As the search engines got smarter, webmasters (of the shady variety) had to get more creative. Today, they now focus on competitor websites instead. If they can't boost their own, they'll drag down their competitors. Thus, Negative SEO was born.

Some of the techniques used to hurt your website include:
  • Copying and distributing your content all over the internet.
  • Ruining your online reputation by creating fake social profiles.
  • Hacking your website.
  • Building a network of spam links to your website.
  • Pointing links to your website using keywords like Viagra, online poker, and many others.
  • Removing the best backlinks your website has.
Unfortunately, this is a legitimate threat, and it works. Black hat forums (online "back alley hangouts") are full of stories from people who have succeeded with this technique.

So now that you know about it, what can you do? Stay tuned to the coming series of articles in the Tourism Talk newsletter and we'll discuss ways to protect your website from Negative SEO.

The StatsCan visitor numbers were released today for June 2017 - and while overall numbers are up, they follow a similar pattern to May.

U.S. visitation went up 7.4% over last June, bringing year to date growth to just over 3%. This is slow, but still represents almost 200,000 additional American visitors to date. In our other mature markets there has also been a bit of a slow down, with France declining again compared to last June, and also only 3% YTD growth. The U.K. is a similar story, but there was a bit of a bump from Germany. In happy mature market news, Australia continues to be way up - with a 17% jump over last June!

In emerging markets, Mexico is showing continued unsurprising growth  - almost 60% more visitors than in June 2016. Brazil also has amazing growth, despite economic uncertainty in the country, and India is up almost 24% over June 2016. China shows modest growth at 9%.

Emerit Helps People Get to Work

For over twenty years, Emerit has helped organizations and programs serving new Canadians, refugees, Indigenous peoples, people with disabilities, at risk youth and others facing barriers to entering the workforce gain the skills and confidence they need to find and keep meaningful employment, improve their lives and contribute to their communities. Training, certification, and labour market intelligence from Emerit are excellent resources for agencies and organizations focused on preparing individuals for employment.
Emerit's Workplace Essentials and Canadian Workplace Essentials are focused on developing the transferable skills, or "soft skills", necessary to be successful in any career. They provide insight into typical Canadian workplace culture and what is expected of an employee, and help them meet industry standards in areas including professionalism, working with others, communication, critical thinking and customer service.
In addition, occupation specific training and professional certification is available for many professions and trades that are suitable for entry level candidates. This training is available in English or French, online or as paper workbooks, and gives the learner the skills and knowledge required to be successful in the occupation through realistic examples and activities. Certification provides industry recognition of the skills and knowledge demonstrated by the learner in their occupation.
These occupations provide the starting point for many careers, and the experience they provide can often lead to advancement within the industry.
Training available includes:
For specific program needs, Emerit has the expertise and experience to provide customized training content and to license use of relevant existing training material from our extensive training library.
Labour Market Intelligence  from Emerit benefits serving agencies by providing accurate data on the current and future state of the tourism labour market. Knowing where shortages are occurring or are expected, and which occupations are affected, and typical levels of compensation and benefits by job type and location can assist agencies with career planning and job placement activities. This data is available as full reports, summary reports, or can be customized to provide specific information requested by an organization.
