October 22, 2017: The Discovery of Oxygen
Eight sages over five centuries shared oxygen's discovery: The story of the discovery of oxygen as revealed in the lives and ideas of eight sages, from a 13th century Syrian scientist to Carl Scheele and Antoine Lavoisier.
John W. Severinghaus is Professor Emeritus of Anesthesiology at UCSF. After training in physics during World War II, he spent 2 years designing radar at MIT and then switched to biophysics. After medical school and a residency, he was doctor-drafted to the National Institutes of Health, where he developed the first electrode that measured CO2
in the bloodstream, as well as a blood gas analyzer. He moved to Marin with his family in 1958 to join the new anesthesia department at UCSF. He is the author of over 500 papers, including histories of blood gases and oxygen. He has been a member of UUCM since 1960.

The fires to the north of us rage on, although the outlook is better and better as fuller levels of containment are reached. The needs of those who have had losses, however, will continue for some time. Some UU families in our neighbor congregations in Santa Rosa and Napa lost their homes.

Also, the Unitarian Universalist Association has expanded its Disaster Relief Fund, set up to help in the aftermath of the hurricanes in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico, to include the fires in California. This fund helps both UUs left in need by these disasters and their communities: https://giving.uua.org/irma-aid.

People helping people -
Is this not what our humanity calls us to do especially in times of greater need? I know many of you and your families are helping in various ways this past week. Some of you are in need even as you are helping others. No matter your situation, it is
often
therapeutic to ask " How can I help?" and seek to answer that question. So I ask you, our families, "How can we help you? What do you need right now?"
Dia de Los Muertos at UUCM - Oct 29th -- We invite children, youth, and adults to
come in costume. All children and youth will start in the service and can participate in putting family photos on the
ofrenda
(altar). Pinata after service.

middle school retreat

about Climate Disaster, and this was before the firestorm. How will this disaster change all of our perspectives and our response to what is now real in our neighborhood?

Remarkable Again: Friday, October 20th, Fireside Room, 7:00 to 8:30 pm
Our ongoing Remarkable People series creates the opportunity to learn about each other from the interesting stories of individual lives. Whether you already know them by name or not, you will learn what you don't know in this evening of sharing and community. Each person talks and there is time for questions and general sociability and usually some sustaining snacks.
Ilana Trumbull Stearns and Henry Bankhead are our October people of the month.
You might already know Henry Bankhead for his pastry expertise; he has shared this often since arriving on the UUCM hilltop. What you may not yet know is that with a degree in anthropology, a masters in fine arts, painting, and then another in library science - he now uses improv to improve libraries, including our own in San Rafael. Come find out how this path has led him to this essential sense of what he does: "the constant process of curious exploration and iterative engagement in the world
".
Ilana Trumbull-Stearns is a quiet but effective activist who juggles parenting and licensed acupuncture (Find her at Healing Trees Acupuncture, San Rafael) while also teaching with both our grade school youth and being a leader for the adult education curriculum. Enroute to all this she has done graduate studies in the history of religion, herbalism and traditional Chinese medicine which have something to do with her ability to do so much while looking calm. Come find out more about living now in the house her grandfather built......and how she came to meet the
Dalai Lama in Dharamsala.
Come learn from and about these good people.

Adult Ed Class on
American Transcendentalists
|
|
Rev. Joy will be offering an Adult Education class this fall on the American Transcendentalists, a small group of Nineteenth Century characters who were very influential in the shaping of the American character, as well as American literature and philosophy. They are also a important part of our Unitarian and Universalist history.
We will read original works by R.W. Emerson, H.D. Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, Bronson Alcott, Elizabeth Peabody and others. The class will meet for five Sundays,

Dinners for Eight starts November 4
|
|
Dinners for Eight is an organized potluck. It is a wonderful way to socialize with UUCM members in their homes 'breaking bread'. We get to know others in a casual setting and have more in depth conversations than large UUCM dinners.
We meet the first Saturday of the month except January and usually have dinners until April or May. A host volunteers their house and provides the main course. Other attendees bring appetizers, salads or vegetables, wine, and dessert. Food assignments are usually done on a first to be contacted. Dinners usually start at 6:30 or 7:00. Individuals are welcome and if your house isn't large enough to host you can co-host with another member.

Emma's Revolution
will be doing a concert as part of the American Friends Service Committee's Centennial Celebration at the First Unitarian Church of Oakland on Saturday, October 28th, 10am to 5pm and will feature workshops and lunch.
Emma's Revolution is the award-winning activist power duo of Pat Humphries and Sandy O, whose songs have been sung for the Dalai Lama, praised by Pete Seeger, and covered by Holly Near.
