"Every year we celebrate the holy season of Advent, O God. Every year we pray those beautiful prayers of longing and waiting, and sing those lovely songs of hope and promise."

Welcome back! I hope that you enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving break with friends and family. Now that Thanksgiving is over we anticipate the joys of the Christmas season. In doing so, we have many upcoming events at St. Ambrose School. During Advent we will begin each week with a prayer service to reflect on the season. Our 8th graders lead us through this service each Monday morning. We also celebrate Advent in service. We have just finished our coat drive and during the month of December we will have a toy drive (in partnership with Fairfax County police) and have a collection for the Holy Family Hospital in Bethlehem.
Tomorrow, Thursday, our 8th graders will take the High School Placement Test for entry into one of the four Diocesan High Schools. Please keep them in your prayers.
We also anticipate Christmas in song and music. On December 13 we will have our Choral Christmas concert at 1:30 pm in the school gym, and on December 15 our band will perform at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm in the school gym. We are proud of our talented students!
We are excited to celebrate the feast of our own patron saint, St. Ambrose on December 7. We will attend a school Mass at 9:00 am, and enjoy a tasty treat of honey dipped doughnuts! Please consider joining us for this wonderful celebration.
Thank you to all of our generous parents and parishioners who donated items for our annual Three Kings Shop. The students will have a fun time shopping.

It appears that there was a glitch and some people have been removed from the distribution list. If you or someone you know did not receive the Buzz on November 16th, please email me so I can add you back on. Thanks so much!

Keep sending in your submissions! I accept them from teachers, staff, and parents. If you know of something interesting going on in our community, or want to give a shout out to someone at the school, please send it in to me. I especially love pictures. Please contact Mrs. Rowley to make sure that we have permission to publish pictures of every student in the picture. Also, please make sure the pictures are less than 5MB. Submissions are due by Mondays at 5pm. Thank you!

WARNING! WARNING!!
ADVENT VIRUS

Be on the alert for symptoms of inner Hope, Peace, Joy and Love . The hearts of a great many have already been exposed to this virus and it is possible that people everywhere could come down with it in epidemic proportions. This could pose a serious threat to what has, up to now, been a fairly stable condition of conflict in the world.

Some signs and symptoms of The Advent Virus:
  • A tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than on fears based on past experiences.
  • An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment.
  • A loss of interest in judging other people.

Third Annual Coat Drive

TODAY is the last day of the Coat Drive.  Thank you to all who have donated to this event.  So far we have collected nearly 120 coats and some other winter wear items.  As usual, the Saint Ambrose School Community has been so generous!  The donations were in really good condition, and we so appreciated that most had been washed or dry cleaned - that made a huge difference.  Some of the items were brand new!  All the donations are being delivered this week to St. James the Greater Catholic Church in Charles Town, WV where there is a large number of families who need these items so very much.  Our neighboring state has had to endure major flooding earlier this year, and there are still the areas with continuing poverty. Thank you again for doing so much for so many.
Three Kings Gift Shop Donations

wrapped_presents.jpg Thank you to all who have donated items for our Three Kings Gift Shop!  We will continue to collect donations until December 13th.  The students will shop on December 15th and 16th.  Please look for THE THREE KINGS GIFT SHOP ORDER FORM in your child's Wednesday folder (and the Wednesday Folder Section of this week's Buzz).  A SignUpGenius is coming soon! For questions please contact Maryellen DeWolfe at [email protected].

Club Updates
Updates from STEM Club

Our K-1 grade STEM Club members were busy with a Thanksgiving related STEM project. We read the story "Turkey for Thanksgiving" by Eve Bunting. If you're not familiar, Mrs. Moose is hosting Thanksgiving and wants a turkey for dinner. Mr. Moose goes out to find turkey and picks up all the forest animal dinner guests along the way. They do find turkey, who is reluctant and thinks he IS dinner. Once they get turkey back to the house, turkey finds there is a seat just for him, AT the table, not ON it.

We then proceeded to make our own chairs for turkey out of PT and TP rolls, cardboard and I think at least 3 or 4 ENTIRE rolls of duct tape!

STEM club is introducing two programs to our older members, both TinkerCAD, which is a 3D modeling program and 123Design, which is a 3D solid modeling program. Our goals are to introduce the students to engineering design programs, similar to those used in industry; apply math concepts and understanding using coordinate systems, workplanes and dimensioning within the programs; navigate and successfully use the graphical user interface (GUI) that these programs utilize; and finally, turn their computer concept design into reality on our 3D printer!
