LAKE OF THE ISLES

LUTHERAN CHURCH

 SEPTEMBER

   2017

Rally Sunday, September 10th
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us."                            Hebrew 12: 1

In early June, I began a sermon series based on the Old Testament characters mentioned in the Book of Hebrews.  Some of the characters were well known characters such as Noah and Abraham, and were simply mentioned in a line or two of scripture, such as Enoch, the man who walked with God and Jochebed, the mother of Moses, Aaron and Miriam.  Each character offered an example and witness of a trusting follower, who in spite of what they could not see, acted by faith.  They are the great cloud of witness mentioned in Hebrews 12.

It is in this first verse that Hebrew world of the Old Testament and the Greek world of the New Testament meet. The biblical characters who once wandered in the wilderness of Canaan are now seated in the heavenly tribunal cheering on the new believers.  Christ himself is seen at the right hand of God presenting the crown of laurel to those who finish the race.  But like all races, it by taking the first step.

The Book of Hebrews was written to a church that was growing disheartened. The first generation of witnesses had believed earnestly that world would welcome the Christian faith and the promises of Jesus Christ.  Instead, they were challenged by increased resistance and persecution.  Young believers were falling away, and even once faithful worshipers were discovering less demanding alternatives.  The author of Hebrews chose to use the language of the sports world to help the Christian community reflect on the challenges of faith.  The race of faith, in particular, is not a sprint, but it is a marathon.  Along the way, we are supported by men and women who inspire us by their example, and encourage us to keep up the perseverance.

Rally Sunday is wonderful way of reminding people that the programs and activities of the congregation are organized to help them run the race of faith. Congregational celebrations, Bible studies, choir rehearsals and service activities, all have a way of bringing people together to share their thoughts and experiences and to encourage them to keep up the race.  Joining is important, not simply for you, but for what you can offer to others on their spiritual journey.

So join us on Sunday, September 10th as we begin our renewed journey at Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church.  Come and celebrate Dixieland music with the Madson Family.  Enjoy fresh pie, ice cream and cake.  Register for Sunday School.  Join the choir or prayer group.  There are many ways to explore your faith and to experience the excitement of lives running together in faith.  And in all these ways, you will prepare yourself to for distance that is ahead. .

Peace, Pastor Arden Haug

HURRICANE HARVEY
LUTHERAN DISASTER RESPONSE
"For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."                                                                                             Romans 8:38-39
Dear friends,

Hurricane Harvey, one of the most powerful storms to hit the United States in years, made landfall last night, threatening millions of our neighbors in Texas and Louisiana with heavy rain, wind and rising tides.

The National Hurricane Center called the storm's effects "life-threatening, devastating and catastrophic" and predicted long periods of rain and flooding, along with massive power outages. While many have evacuated, significant damage is still expected, and thousands of people may be housed in shelters for extended periods of time.

We have an opportunity to accompany our neighbors during and after this disaster, in Jesus Christ's name.

Your gifts are needed now to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey.  Your support through Lutheran Disaster Response will bring hope and healing to those who have been or will be affected by this hurricane. Lutheran Disaster Response is already collaborating with our affiliates to initiate recovery efforts.

While the storm is not over, you can help now.  Gifts designated for "Hurricane Response - United States" will be used in full until the response is complete to help disaster survivors recover and rebuild.

Stay connected to the latest events and our response to this and other disasters through our  Facebook page. Join me in prayer and partnership.  There will be a a bulletin insert in Sunday's bulletin to help spread the word.

With gratitude,

The Rev. Daniel Rift
Director, ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal

SPEAKER SERIES ON "WORKING"
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 17
"Working" is the theme of a speaker series that began this summer and will continue running once a month through the course of the next year. It's inspired by the Studs Terkel book of that name in which "people talk about what they do all day and how they feel about what they do." There are many people within our congregation engaged in fascinating work. This series gives us an opportunity to learn more about our members and the work they are involved in.

The next segment of the series will be on Sunday, September 17th and will feature Lake of the Isles Lutheran member, Mark Duff.  C aptain Mark Duff is a Delta Airlines pilot and is currently "Special Project Manager for the Airbus A350XWB. That job entails all aspects of taking delivery and putting into service a new aircraft type for Delta Air Lines. After this project is completed, he'll return to line flying and line instruction as a Senior Line Instructor Pilot.

Mark's talk will take place after a brief coffee break following the Sunday morning service. Those who are interested will be invited to take their coffee/tea into the Christy Room for about 45 minutes. The first 20 minutes will be an informal talk by Mark about his work...leaving the remaining time for questions from those in attendance.
