Many of our teams visit patients in mental health sites. PAWS believes it is important to help teams understand different mental health issues, how disorders present themselves, and how teams can provide the best and safest visit possible to people in this situation. By understanding why people behave in a particular way, PAWS teams can provide a more personalized visit for the patients as well as assist site staff with increasing motivation, lessening anxiety, and giving the person hope for their future.

Our PAWS for Reading program is based on the concept that a pet's non-judgmental acceptance and loving attention can help new and struggling readers feel more comfortable and less self-conscious when reading aloud. These sessions create a forum where readers can practice their skills in a "safe" place without criticism. PAWS' goal is to provide a positive reading experience where the reader builds confidence, strengthens literacy skills, and develop a love for reading. PAWS for Reading sessions are held during the day at schools and in the evening at libraries on a regular, set schedule.

Sometimes petting and brushing your dog isn't enough during a visit. Working for prolonged periods of time with kids or elders sometimes calls for a few extra "tricks up your sleeve." We have created a fun, hour-long class that will give you scads of ideas on easy, simple activities you can incorporate into your visits - with not much more than you already have - a dog, treats, and a few well chosen "things" to bring along.

The Norrisville Branch of the Harford County Library (MD) is the newest partner with our PAWS for Reading program. Offering sessions on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings, we are happy to expand our literacy program to the kids in western Harford County! PAWS Has Moved!
|
|
From Lynne Robinson, Executive Director
We're IN! We've moved into our new office and training center and we think it's incredible. Our signs are up, including a huge green paw - so there is no way you can miss our building in the Delaware Industrial Park in Newark. While we're still settling in, we are definitely ready for business as usual and for YOU to come visit. Please drop by just to see how beautifully we're expanding or to take a PAWS University training or one of our dog training classes.
We'd love to see you at our casual
Open House on December 3rd
and at our Grand Opening on January 22
nd
.
A lot of training and coursework will be based here, but we are still moving out to our outer boundaries to make it easier and more convenient for you and your friends to access what we offer. Watch for class listings.
Please check our website - new, new, new - and see what we've been up to. And don't forget to keep sending us your stories. Remember, YOU and your therapy companion are what make PAWS so precious and so successful.
_________
Our new PAWS Office and Training Center is truly a wish come true! All of us at PAWS thank YOU and everyone who helped build PAWS over the past 11 years.
PAWS is so grateful to both the
Longwood Foundation and the
Welfare Foundation for their trust and confidence in our Expansion Plan. Thanks to their generous partial funding, we were able to get started - finding and moving into our great new office. Now we're diligently working to secure the necessary additional funding to continue and sustain PAWS' growth.
We're counting on the same amazing and generous spirit and support of our friends that brought us to today. Together, we'll grow even stronger and help more people in need of PAWS pet therapy... that's what PAWS is here to do!
