CMC Seeking a New Historian

Do you love CMC and want to help out in a special way?   The club is in need of a new Historian, to succeed Rocko Smucker, who has done a great job during his tenure.   The club's archive is housed at the UNC-A Library, and probably the most important role of the Historian is managing and maintaining that archive.   If you like this kind of stuff and might be interested, please email Barbara Morgan at [email protected] to talk it over with her.

Here are the basics of the job, from the 2015 job description.

The CMC historian presents and interprets history in order to shape or build upon public knowledge of past events. The historian traces and builds a historical profile of the CMC. The following are specific duties:
  • Gather historical data from various sources, including archives, books, artifacts, and electronic files
  • Analyze and interpret historical information to determine its authenticity and significance in regard to include or exclude from CMC's history collection
  • Archive or preserve materials and artifacts by making periodic accessions and documenting those accessions to the UNCA Special Collections Ramsey Library which is the archive of CMC records.  The accessions include updates to previously established Record Series or a new Record Series created at the discretion of the Historian.
  • Provide advice or guidance on historical topics and preservation issues to both CMC members and the general public
  • Write reports and articles to include summaries of CMC activities at such times as anniversaries of the club at the direction of the CMC Council

Hiking the Art Loeb Trail

by Daisy Teng Karasek

On a Sunday hike three months ago, Lorraine Bernhardt asked if I had hiked the Art Loeb Trail. I told her that I had been on various bits and sections of it, but had not done it end-to-end. Lorraine, who has been hiking with CMC for two years, has read that National Geographic Adventure magazine has listed the trail as one of 30 best hikes in North America, and she would like to check out this gem that is in our own backyard.

Thus, an idea was born - let's hike the entirety of the Art Loeb Trail - listed on National Geographic map #780 as a "National Recreation Trail" - in a series of day hikes, for those of us who are not up to the challenges of backpacking and thru-hiking. Lorraine and I have teamed up to plan this series of hikes to cover the 30.1 miles that make up this trail, named after a member of this club.

The first hike is scheduled for Sunday, October 1. It will cover what is officially designated as Section One of the trail - the southern end that starts from Davidson River Campground and goes 12+ miles to Gloucester Gap. The details of this hike will be in the hike schedule that will soon be published for the fourth quarter.

We plan to have the remaining hikes scheduled over the next few quarters and hope that those of you who would like to complete the Art Loeb Trail will be able to join us.

Yet Another Reminder To Save the Date
For the ANNUAL DINNER!
Monday, October 30th

CMC's Annual Meeting and Dinner will be held on Monday, October 30th at the Biltmore Town Square Hilton, beginning at 5:30 pm.  Join good friends for good fellowship, good food, and a continued celebration of the 40th anniversary of the MST with speaker Kate Dixon, Executive Director of the Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail. Keep an eye out for a special news blast in mid September.

More photos needed for Annual Dinner

Our photo sharing is looking pretty sparse at this moment.  Please do your part to add pizazz to the social hour by submitting up to 5 pictures by the deadline, Oct. 22, to:  [email protected].

Reminder:   This year's theme is CMCers on the Trail.   CMC - where the women are strong, the men are good looking, and all the children above average.   (Thank you, Garrison Keillor.)

Be creative, and Point, Click, Send!
