Hiking the Art Loeb Trail
by Daisy Teng Karasek
On a Sunday hike three months ago, Lorraine Bernhardt asked if I had hiked the Art Loeb Trail. I told her that I had been on various bits and sections of it, but had not done it end-to-end. Lorraine, who has been hiking with CMC for two years, has read that National Geographic Adventure magazine has listed the trail as one of 30 best hikes in North America, and she would like to check out this gem that is in our own backyard.
Thus, an idea was born - let's hike the entirety of the Art Loeb Trail - listed on National Geographic map #780 as a "National Recreation Trail" - in a series of day hikes, for those of us who are not up to the challenges of backpacking and thru-hiking. Lorraine and I have teamed up to plan this series of hikes to cover the 30.1 miles that make up this trail, named after a member of this club.
The first hike is scheduled for Sunday, October 1. It will cover what is officially designated as Section One of the trail - the southern end that starts from Davidson River Campground and goes 12+ miles to Gloucester Gap. The details of this hike will be in the hike schedule that will soon be published for the fourth quarter.
We plan to have the remaining hikes scheduled over the next few quarters and hope that those of you who would like to complete the Art Loeb Trail will be able to join us.
