Noted Author and Educator Dr. Chris Anson to Deliver Keynote Message at Claflin's 16th Pedagogy Conference on Contemporary English and Language Arts
Noted author and educator Chris Anson will be the keynote speaker for Claflin University's 16th Conference on Contemporary English and Language Arts Pedagogy in Secondary and Postsecondary Institutions, on October 25-26 at Ministers' Hall. The theme of the conference is Writing Across the Curriculum which focuses on writing in classes outside of composition, literature, and other English courses.
 
Anson will speak at 2:30-3:45 p.m. on Wednesday. His topic will be "Impossible to Plagiarize: Design Strategies for Worry-Free Classrooms."  Anson will also lead an assessment workshop on Thursday at 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. titled "Helping Students to Evaluate Writing: Tools for Formative Assessment" on Thursday.
 
The topic for the opening session at 9:30-10:45 a.m. is Race Matters. Other topics scheduled for the first day of the conference are: Adolescent Literature (9:30-10:45 a.m.); Disciplinary Methods and Identities (2:30-3:45 p.m.); Writing Processes in a Multi-Genre Creative Writing Class (2:30-3:45 p.m.) and Differentiating Our Instruction: Diversifying Ourselves to Address the Changing Demographics of College Writers (4-4:40 p.m.).
 
Anson is professor and director of the Campus Writing and Speaking Program at North Carolina State University. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in language, composition, and literacy and works with faculty across the curriculum to reform undergraduate education in the areas of writing and speaking. Before moving to NCSU in 1999, he spent fifteen years at the University of Minnesota, where he directed the Program in Composition from 1988-96 and was Professor of English and Morse-Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor. He received his Ph.D. and second M.A. in English with a specialization in composition studies from Indiana University, and his B.A. and first M.A. in English from Syracuse University. He has published 15 books and more than 110 journal articles.
 
Presentations scheduled for Thursday, October 26 are: The Hate U Give, an examination of the New York Times Bestseller -  The Hate U Give and its author, Angie Thomas (9:30-10:45 p.m.); The Teaching of Foreign Languages (10:10:50 p.m.); Workshop on Assessment (11 a.m.-12:15 p.m.); Teaching Matters (2:15-3:30 p.m.); Composing Narratives (2:15-3:30 p.m.) and Text, Image and Talk About Writing (3:45-5 p.m.)
 
Professors and teachers from 10 institutions will participate in this year's conference. For the first time, teachers from South Carolina's independent schools (K-12) will participate and present at the conference. Three sessions will feature creative writing and research by undergraduate students.

Claflin University Concert Choir Harvest Fest Carnival Set for October 31

The Claflin University Concert Choir will host its annual Harvest Fest Carnival, on Tuesday, October 31 at 7 p.m. at the Jonas T. Kennedy Arena Parking Lot. Admission is free and open to the public. Area youth are invited to join the campus community and local residents for a safe, family-focused, fun event. The Harvest Fest Carnival is a fundraiser for the Concert Choir and offers an alternative to other Halloween activities.  The event will feature music, food, vendor tables, exhibits and interactive games.
 
Local businesses and non-profit organizations can promote and sell products by paying a $25 vendors fee.  All checks or other payments should be made payable to the Claflin University Concert Choir. Congratulations to Derrick L. Quarles, '14, on receiving his Master of Public Administration degree from Grand Canyon University. Quarles serves as the manager of the Annual Fund/Alumni Relations in the division of Institutional Advancement at Claflin University. 

Join the Charlotte Alumni Chapter of the Claflin University International Alumni Association (CUIAA) on Saturday, November 18 for the 1st Annual Health and Wellness 5K Walk and Run. Registration begins at 6 a.m. and the race starts at 7 a.m. at the Edisto Memorial Garden Arts Center Shelter. Individuals, students and team rates are available. Panther Pride
The Claflin University volleyball team snapped a four-game losing streak on Monday, October 16 defeating Paine College 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-14)  in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) match at the Tullis Arena.
 
With the win, Claflin lifts its overall record to 5-13 and 5-6 in the SIAC.
 
The straight set win saw the Lady Panthers produce 43 kills, including 16 in the third frame. Jordan Wallace and Diara Lewis  led the way for Claflin with nine kills apiece.
 
Paine managed just 22 kills with a low of five in the first set.
 
The Lady Panthers also recorded 43 digs in the match. Jhi Piper-Mules  collected 13 digs to lead Claflin, while Alycia Perez-Johnson  added nine digs along with four aces.
 
Chania Rispress had 34 assists to lead the Lady Panthers in that department.
 
Claflin will play Fayetteville State University at Fan Appreciation Night on Wednesday, October 18 at 6 p.m. in the Tullis Arena.
