Link to Learning

What does it mean to have a "growth mindset?" This approach refers to the belief that intelligence can be developed with time and practice. Research shows that students with a growth mindset are more likely to perform better in school and more likely to approach life optimistically. MENTOR has collaborated with PERTS, a Stanford University center, to create a toolkit that highlights the value of establishing a growth mindset in youth.

Giving Thanks

During this time of year, it is important not to forget to express appreciation to those who play a significant role in our lives. November is Thank Your Mentor Month, and MENTOR is promoting this time by encouraging everyone to  honor their mentors by sharing their stories on social media. The VMP team joined in the fun by sharing how our mentors influenced us. Check out our photos, and be sure to tag us in your own stories using #ThankYourMentor. Looking for other ways to incorporate this theme of thankfulness? View the rest of the social media toolkit here.

Also in the spirit of Thanksgiving, VMP would like to extend our gratitude to  programs, volunteers, staff, and supporters of mentoring who do so much to promote mentoring and impact the lives of Virginia's youth. We truly appreciate all of those who make a difference!

Celebrate Mentoring this Winter
In January, thousands of mentoring programs across the country will participate in National Mentoring Month, a concentrated burst of public awareness for the mentoring field. Make sure your program takes full advantage of the opportunities to promote the benefits of mentoring. MENTOR has assembled a comprehensive toolkit with templates for messaging, calendars of events, and more. Download the toolkit here to make sure your program is prepared to celebrate mentoring in January.

At the close of National Mentoring Month, the 7th Annual National Mentoring Summit will take place  February 1-3, 2017 at The Renaissance in Washing ton, D.C. The National Mentoring Summit, consisting of several workshops and networking opportunities, is the only national convening of youth mentoring professionals, researchers, philanthropic investors and government and civic leaders aimed at collectively strengthening and expanding quality mentoring relationships for young people across the country. The theme for this year's summit is "Building Relationships, Advancing the Movement". To learn more and r egister, click  here.

Health Sciences Academy Celebrates 10 Years of Service
A longtime partner with VMP, the Health Sciences Academy (HSA) helps high school students make informed choices about the health professions they wish to pursue while providing resources to explore possible careers. The program offers a health sciences exploration course that includes interactive lectures from health care workers, a mentoring program with VCU undergraduates along with field trips to college campuses and Monroe Park.  The Health Sciences Academy is celebrating 10 years of providing career exploration programming to over 775 HSA alumni. In Spring 2017, HSA will be providing their health careers exploration class to 80 high school sophomores.

Dr. Seth Leibowitz, Executive Director of Health Sciences Programs and Advising, reflects on the program's achievements:

"Virginia Mentoring Partnership has been alongside Health Sciences Academy throughout 10 years of incredible growth.  To date we have had 890 high school mentees and 462 VCU student mentors engaged in activities to explore careers in the health professions. We could not have built HSA without the expert insight, training, and cheerleading offered by VMP. We are eternally grateful!"

Congratulations to VCU HSA on its continued success! To learn more, check out the program's website
