September News and Notes

Hello friends - lots of news!  We are busy planning for the upcoming year. Please read through this newsletter carefully and watch for event flyers in the Literacy Centers.

There has been a big change in the Framingham Literacy staff.  After many years on our office staff, Elin Calver has retired.  We had a great retirement luncheon at Minado (check out our photo!) and presented her with a gift certificate for travel with Road Scholar. We wish her well!  Our summer intern Kate will continue working during the school year.  Please make her feel welcome.

Please contact us if you have any questions. Enjoy the last few days of summer!  Anne, Kiera & Laurie

A bit of fun to kick off the year!

Please join us on Wednesday, September 6th (5:30 - 7pm) for pizza before the Brazilian jazz concert -- all are welcome!  AND please join us on Friday, September 8th in Natick for drinks and cookies (12noon - 2pm).  See you then!

For Tutors
  • A reunion!  For all tutors who were trained in the last year, reunion is a chance to get together and talk about your experiences with a trainer.  Join Laurie Christie for a discussion of the challenges of tutoring and bring your concerns.  September 6th, 4 - 5:30pm, Literacy Classroom Framingham.
  • On September 20th at 1pm, Dr. Marcel LaVergne will offer a tutor workshop entitled:  Developing Communicative Skills through Reading.
"This workshop will introduce the participants to the reading process and will explore various activities that will encourage students to speak. Although people read for pleasure and to gain information, the goal here is to make reading the springboard for conversation and discussion. The participants will learn some theory about reading and have some hands-on experiences to practice techniques that they can use themselves with their own students." Join us (Costin Room, Framingham)!
  • Ready for more?  We still have 40 students on the waiting list and we will register more in September.  If you are interested in taking another student, please contact the office. We also need additional conversation leaders to act as substitutes and to lead conversation classes.  Let us know if you are interested!

  • As always, thanks for all your hard work!
