Dear Steamboat Springs High School Parents and Friends,
We are grateful for the number of parents who have come to the SSHS PIC meetings these past two months to hear from our school staff and speaker.
In October Sara Ross, LCSW, talked about the teenage brain and how its development effects our teens' behavior and emotional state. All great information and tips for parents contending with the ups and downs of the adolescent years. We have some additional resources below you might be interested in reviewing and for those who were unable to attend, we hope to upload the presentation within the next week to our SSHS PIC webpage found within the SSHS website.
In November, we will be focusing on how the increase of technology, social media and screen time is affecting our teenagers and hosting a screening of the award winning documentary, "Screenagers - Growing up in the Digital Age" on November 6th. Check out the upcoming events section below for further information regarding this event as well as our SSHS PIC speakers in December and January.
Remember that Parent Teacher Conferences are right around the corner on November 1st and 2nd. SSHS will be using the online scheduler Pick A Time to schedule. If you are unable to meet with your student(s) teachers during conferences and would like to discuss academic progress, be sure to contact them to coordinate another time. Additionally, SSHS PIC will be coordinating a soup dinner to say thanks to our wonderful SSHS teachers and staff, Wednesday 11/1, the first night of conferences.To assist with this dinner, please go to SignUp Genius to help.

Principal Taulman gave the PIC a number of updates:
- Teacher Professional Development: On Friday, October 6th, the Steamboat Springs School District hosted a Collaboration Day with 650 teachers statewide. It was the first time, Steamboat has hosted this type of workshop, more information is below on continuing education for teachers.
- Safety Drills: SSHS held a safety drill on Wednesday, September 27th; the week prior SSHS practiced an evacuation. The School District is working on procedures and a reunification plan, where do parents pick up their students.
- Music Curriculum FTE Increase and Program Expansion: This year SSHS was able to increase the time allotment of the music teacher, so SSHS now offers six sections of music classes. And, SSHS now has a community partnership with the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra which is providing a directed study orchestra program. There are currently 14 students enrolled in the class that takes place during 3rd hour in the Lutheran Church located across from Garner Field on Amethyst St. This is currently available to students already involved in a strings program and have string instrument experience, but may be expanded to new students in the future.
- Fine Arts: Fine Arts: The Fine Arts curriculum has increased from .5 FTE (teacher) to 2.5 FTEs (teacher time) and it has been very positive for students interested in the Arts.
- Math: There are now six math teachers, an increase from last year.
- Capacity: SSHS is now at 96% capacity with 843 kids. There are 188 seniors, some who may be graduating early but that number is not known as of yet. And SSHS expects 200 students to come into SSHS in fall 2018, based on current 8th grade enrollment.

SSHS Counselor have a report to the PIC as well:
- Colorado Mountain College (CMC): The counselors continue to meet with CMC to provide more opportunities for SSHS students. They already had a great meeting and plan for another one next semester.
- Freshmen transition: The counselors have developed a guide to help students understand how the counselors can help them. There also has been a Freshman survey to help identify whether needs are being met.
- 4 year Plan: Counselors are meeting with all the students, except Seniors, to help them complete their four year plan with the goal of finalizing them by January/February.

Danica Moss gave a College Planning Meeting
- Financial Aid meeting coming up
- SAT testing will be held October 28th
- She has a goal for all Juniors to take the SAT and ACT by December 2017.
- A SAT boot camp will be open to Juniors in November; there will be another boot camp offered to Sophomore in the Spring.

 At our PIC meeting. co-chair Steph Smith shared that our PIC funds have been used to to fund two picnic tables and one bike rack at a price of $3000.00 and snacks and medical supplies for the nurse's office at $500.00. The bike rack fits up to 18 bikes!
The current PIC balance is at $8237.13 and we hope to generate increased revenue with more SSHS parents and staff designating SSHS PIC as a beneficiary of the City Market rewards card. Please go to www.citymarket.com/rewards to register your card to SSHS PIC today!

Continuing Education
for Teachers

Our teachers recently participated in a professional development conference called COLLAB Day hosted at the Steamboat Springs High School. COLLAB is short for collaboration and is also an acronym for Communities of Learning Lead to Achievement by All Students.
The conference offered collaboration time with teachers in five neighboring school districts who teach the same subject. Participants were also able to choose four other sessions from a wide variety of topics of interest, including brain architecture, discipline, depth and complexity, teaching with technology, and much, much more.

Parent-Teacher conferences are coming up on November 1 &2. November 2 & 3 are days off of school for our students. Please watch for instructions on how to sign up for a conference with your child's teacher.

This half-day symposium will provide parents of children of all ages an opportunity to learn and gather tools to support their parenting efforts.
Keynote speaker, Diane Andrews, will address the topic "How to Be a Trusted Adult." Parents may choose two breakout sessions from a wide variety of topics including: Parenting as a United Front; When Reading Is Harder Than It Should Be; Literacy Development for Elementary Age; It's All In Your Head - The Mystery Of Self Regulation; Dads Only; Guiding The Smart But Scattered Child; Parenting, Partners and Me, Finding the Balance; and Developmentally Appropriate Parenting Techniques for 0-5, Elementary, Middle School, and High School ages.

| On Thursday, October 12th, CC4E, SSHS PIC and SSMC PIC hosted an election forum at SSHS, moderated by former SSHS student, Liam Hahn. Superintendent, Dr. Brad Meeks and Mr. Mark Rydberg explained the upcoming bond and mill levy and took questions. SSHS PIC continues to strive to have speakers present on current topics and provide resources/articles. This past month we had an excellent speaker on the teenage brain and we plan to post her presentation on our PIC webpage soon. In addition, please see articles/youtube postings on the teenage brain that might be enlightening to you.
