Message from the Rector
October 16, 2017

A widow said to Elijah, "As surely as the Lord your God lives, I don't have any bread-only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. Elijah said to her "Don't be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 'The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land." She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.                                                                                                      1 Kings 17:12a, 13-15

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque
October 17
by Lance Davis

In the Narthex of our Parish, you will see an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Though this is a classic and much-beloved devotion, many persons are unaware of the story of the Saint who first promoted it. Here is what the Matins readings from the Anglican Breviary have to say about her:

"Margaret Mary Alacoque was born in Burgundy, in 1647, and was a devout child, and patient under an illness which kept her bedridden from the age of eleven to fifteen. During this time her father died, and she and her mother suffered much from the ill-treatment of kinsfolk with whom they lived. Her delight was to spend long hours in prayer and in the contemplation of heavenly things. At the age of twenty she had a vision which assured her that she was called of God to become a religious, and four years later she entered the Visitandine Convent of Paray-le-Monial. Her life became at once a bright example to others. For she was endowed by God in a high degree with the gift of prayer. And often she saw visions. Of these the most famous was one wherein Jesus appeared to her whilst she was in prayer before the Most Holy Sacrament, and, opening his breast, shewed her his divine Heart, enkindled in flames, and encircled with a crown of thorns. And she ever afterward averred that at this time he bade her, in return for his infinite love, and in atonement for the insults of ungrateful men, to seek to have established the public veneration of his Heart, which veneration he promised to enrich with the treasures of heavenly grace. When from humility she hesitated to undertake so great a task, our loving Saviour (as she said) encouraged her, and also comforted her with the assurance of the very great blessings which would afterwards accrue to the Church from the worship of his divine Heart, at the same time pointing out Blessed Claude de la Colombiere, a Jesuit priest of great holiness, as her guide and helper. Margaret strove with all diligence to fulfil this high and difficult purpose. Vexations, and even bitter insults, were not wanting to her on the part of those who maintained that she was the subject of mental delusions, especially from the religious of her own convent. She not only bore these troubles patiently, but even profited by them, offering herself, through suffering and reproach, as a victim to God's glory, and thus taking all her troubles as a means of the better furthering of his purpose. Renowned for her perfection in prayer, and for the simple goodness of her life, she went to her divine Spouse in 1690, being the forty-third year of her age; and in 1920 she was formally canonized."

O Lord Jesus Christ, who in a wondrous manner didst make known unto blessed Margaret Mary thy Virgin, the unsearchable riches of thy Heart: grant us, by her merits and example; that we may love thee in all things, and far above all things, and so find in thy Heart an habitation wherein we may dwell for ever more. Who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost ever, one God, world without end. Amen.
