Hello good friends and clients.

Montana fall is in full swing and it's amazing. The trees are bright, the sky is blue and the holiday spirit is in the air. Our Tamarack Time! was a huge success this year and I must boast...out of the nine casseroles, my "Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm" took first place. The recipe is below and it's a good one for those chilly days ahead. Second place was Craig Wagner's "Lumberjack Casserole." Third place and first time entry, was "Ziti Pasta" from Liz Smith. What a fun event and so well supported by the Bigfork community!

Of course, the next biggie in the village is Halloween. All the Bigfork children and families get dressed up and go around to all the businesses in the afternoon between 4 and 6 pm. It is a riot but in a good way!

Now for some real estate news from Kelley's Market Trends...

Through September of this year there were 1,425 residential sales, which is up 13.5 percent from the 1,256 sales at this time last year. This is nearly the same as the all-time high of 1,429 sales in the first nine months of 2006. At the current rate of sales, it is likely that 2017 will set a new high in Flathead County with year-end sales of around 1,900. Mortgage interest rates continue to be about the same as they were last month. The current average 15-year rate is at around 3.13 percent, compared to 2.9 percent at this time a year ago. The average 30-year rate at around 3.83 percent compared to 3.54 percent in October of 2016. Read more here.

My favorite movie for this time of year is
BeetleJuice

It brings back memories of past Halloweens when the boys were
little. There would always be a Halloween party at school and trick or treating at night in the Colorado cold weather.

Then, we'd come home, warm up and settle down to hot chocolate, popcorn and a scary movie. Beetlejuice became our favorite.

Happy Halloween!

From my kitchen to yours....Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Casserole
Ask me how I came up with the name...Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm

1 T butter
1 onion, chopped
1 eight ounce piece of deli ham (I use Hempler's), diced into small chunks
½ t fresh thyme, chopped
1 17.5 ounce package of potato gnocchi
½ c chicken broth
1 c frozen peas, thawed
¼ c of heavy cream
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Heavy dash of nutmeg
Heavy dash of cayenne
1 c (or more) of Swiss or Gruyere cheese (I use Trader Joe's blend of Gruyere and Cheddar)

Preheat the broiler to high heat.
Melt the butter in a large ovenproof skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until softened, about three minutes. Add the ham and thyme and cook until the ham is lightly browned.

Add the chicken broth and 3/4 c water and bring to a simmer. Add the gnocchi. Stir well, cover and cook until the gnocchi is slightly tender, about five minutes. Remove the heat. Uncover and stir in the peas and ¾ cup cheese, cream, ¼ t salt, ¼ t pepper, cayenne, and nutmeg. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top.  If it looks dry, add more cream in a stream along the top of the casserole. Broil until golden and bubbly, about three minutes. Serve.

Please allow me to toot my own horn!

Denise's Book Corner...Dracula

Is Dracula pure evil, the dark side of human nature or one of the most appealing male characters in history?

Written well over 100 years ago by Bram Stoker, the story has endured through books, movies, clubs and plays. It has also created a substantial vampire culture that crosses all generations. Bram Stoker was a theatre man and unhappily married, too. I wonder what Ms. Bram Stoker was like!

Bram's active imagination came from scary stories his mother told him while he was curiously ill during his entire childhood.

One of my favorite characters in the book is Renfield, the endearing inmate at the lunatic asylum overseen by Dr. John Seward. Renfield has delusions that compel him to eat the bugs, specifically cockroaches, that Dracula is sending to him. In the play, the cockroaches are "played" by dates. Hmmm, after I learned that, I have never looked at dates the same!

Although Stoker wrote 4 novels, Dracula is the one that brought him fame. I guess there is at least one great novel in all of us!
