Thanksgiving
November 24

Sometimes the focus on the food, as relevant as it is, distracts us from the more simple concept of just giving pure thanks. Kerri Sparling's  Diabetes Until Me  has a can't-help-but-make-you-smile pre-Thanksgiving "Thanks Diabetes" list that is gratitude at its finest. In terms of the big day itself, Battle Diabetes offers tips for navigating the traditional blessed meal.

CDF Out & About in the Community: Type One Nation

Chris Dudley, the Chris Dudley Foundation, JDRF and many other valued community partners and wonderful friends shared the power of Type One Nation on Saturday, November 5  right  here in  Portland ! For the second  consecutive  year, we gathered together at the Nike World Headquarters with hundreds of guests, working together to tackle diabetes as one united front.

We were joined by impressive role models and speakers like the talented and multi-skilled Mike Avery, professional stuntman, ironman and now photographer with T1D;  Miss Oregon Outstanding Teen, Abby Hoppe; OHSU's Michael Harris, PhD, Director of Psychology at CDRC and ADA member who sits on the editorial board of Diabetes Care; plus counselor and wellness coach Heather Neilson MA, LPC who is truly dedicated to Transforming Diabetes; among numerous others!

Chris Dudley had a great day leading breakout sessions and moderating the "Thriving with T1D" Panel session. Chris also took some time to nurture and inspire the next generations. He read his one of a kind and uplifting signature children's book Chris Dreams Big to an adoring  audience of some very cute kiddos.

Chris Dreams Big by authors Chris Dudley and Chris Love Dudley is a truly inspiring tale that hits BIG where it counts for children who have diabetes or who might experience other challenges in life. Chris Dudley's sweet biographical story shows that conditions like diabetes, disabilities or anything else do not need to limit a child's dreams. You can still purchase  Chris Dreams Big here...

CDF and Friends went 50/50, shining bright at the Portland Trail Blazers & Phoenix Suns Game!

The Portland Trail Blazers stole some much needed sunshine for  Oregon  from the Phoenix Suns in a showdown not just against each other, but also against a common foe: diabetes!

In the name and spirit of Chris Dudley, who is actually an alma mater of both teams, CDF headlining superstars like Dee, Maggie, Jenny, Wayne, Gretchen, Kaylin, Megan, Elle, Amanda, Jacob, Virginia, Ben, Sam Cracey, Joey and Kelsey,  stepped up and  took it right into the paint and hustled up, down, over and under for diabetes. They wandered among fans everywhere in the  Moda   Center , spreading smiles, high five's and diabetes awareness ,   while  selling the 50/50 Raffle tickets for the night. What a deal it was; and also  so much  fun! 50% of the money went to the lucky ticket winner, 25% to the Blazer's signature do-good nonprofit the Make It Better Foundation, and 25% to...you guessed it - the hometown hero ,  CDF!

We were al s o joined by lucky raffle winners from the weekend before at the Type One Nation event. Cheers and  BIG  thanks to the diabetes community  and the generous ticket patrons,   plus  all of our basketball friends and partners, including the Portland Trail Blazers!
Where Are They Now
Chris Gindele
1. How many years did you attend camp and what was the last year that you attended?
I attended Dudley Camp for 6 years and last attended in 2006!

2. What is your favorite camp memory?
Camp as a whole was memorable. Some of my favorite general camp memories include the annual capture the flag game, the slip and slide, the splash contest at the pool (which typically just turned into a belly flop contest and being entertained by other people's pain) and catching up with old friends. My favorite basketball specific memories were the individual drill/training sessions with the great coaching staff, the level of competition that allowed me to improve as a basketball player and winning the camp championship my last year.

3. Did you learn anything at camp to improve your diabetes care?
Tons! Especially when it came to managing my diabetes during high stress times in the middle of a game. When I was in Jr. High and High School I played AAU basketball and we often played 3-4 games in a day. Being able to keep myself nourished, hydrated and my BG in a healthy range that ensured I could play at the highest level was all a direct result of what we learned at Dudley Camp. Camp also reinforced the importance of daily exercise and its benefits for day to day life with Diabetes (something I still do today to maintain my health).

4. Do you stay in contact with anyone you met while attending camp?
The person I stay in regular contact with is Jason Goetz and have seen him a couple of times since my time at camp ended. The benefit of Social Media also allows me to keep tabs on other campers and just see how they are doing, without necessarily needing to directly reach out to them. This camp has a knack for producing some outstanding people who are succeeding in their personal, professional and diabetes lives.

5. Do you have any advice for present or future campers?
Yes, savor the moment. Enjoy every single second in the time you are able to attend the Chris Dudley Camp. Do not take for granted the opportunity you have to be around some of the best people this world has to offer, both on and off the basketball court. If you really invest yourself in what this camp offers, I am confident you will be like me, looking back to 10 years ago, with fond memories and lasting bonds.

*Tell us about yourself since your camper days....did you attend college and where...are you working...are you married...do you have children...anything else you would like to share...
Lets see, in 2006 and 2007 I won back to back State Championships in AAU basketball in the state of Ohio and played for the #1 team in the country at Nationals. I graduated college in 2012 from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio with a degree in Strategic Communication and went to work for a small software startup right out of school. In 2013 I moved to Texas to join a large Global Telecommunications company, where I have lived and worked ever since. Despite 21 years of T1D, I am complication free, live a healthy and active lifestyle and maintain a 7.0 (or better) A1C.

Happy Thanksgiving!
