Rutgers and NJCTS Continue to Lead the Way in Collaborative Research

In the second significant Tourette research publication of the year, Rutgers University-New Brunswick has announced that their scientists are the first to use a Nobel Prize winning genetic engineering technique to create brain cells from the blood cells of individuals. The technique was used in a three-generation family with Tourette syndrome to help determine what causes the disorder.

October is Bullying Prevention and Awareness Month

Every October, schools and organizations across the country join  in observing National Bullying Prevention Month. The goal: encourage communities to work together to stop bullying and cyberbullying by increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of bullying on all children of all ages.

NJCTS has been working with the New Jersey Coalition of Bullying Awareness and Prevention for since its inception and continues to include anti-bullying messaging in all educational outreach, including our Youth Advocate presentations at local schools.

If you are intersted in having a Youth Advocate speak to your school or community group, please reach out to Patricia Phillips, Education Outreach Coordinator, at [email protected], or call 908.575.7350.

TS Rocks -  First-Ever Concert for TS a Success!
Kathie Sterzinar (center) is a believer in the joyful power of music.
It was on a chilly morning last fall, during the New Jersey Center for Tourette Syndrome's NJ Walks for TS in North Jersey, that she decided to show her support for the TS community in a big way. She brought the idea for TS Rocks- a concert to raise awareness of TS - to  NJCTS Executive Director Faith W. Rice.
"I was delighted by the idea of a concert and Kathie's enthusiasm brought everything together in a very big way," said Rice.

Join NJCTS For a Screening of Swim Team

What would you do if your community gave up on your child? In New Jersey, the parents of a boy on the autism spectrum take matters into their own hands. They form a competitive swim team, recruiting diverse teens on the spectrum and training them with high expectations and zero pity. Swim Team chronicles the extraordinary rise of the Jersey Hammerheads, capturing a moving quest for inclusion, independence and a life that feels winning.

The screening takes place on November 4 at 2 p.m. at Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Teaneck. A talkback will follow with members of the cast, NJCTS  youth advocate Mike Hayden and Dr. David Levesque. The event is part of the Teaneck International Film Festival.

Wednesday Webinars Approaching TWO Milestones

In the next few months, our Wednesay Webinars series will celebrate two milestones: Our 10th Anniversary of the very first webinar and our 100th webinar During that time we have reached families, educators, medical professionals and mental health professionals across the entire world.

Join the community - Volunteer!

  • November: Office volunteers needed in Somerville, NJ
  • Nov. 9-10: Table volunteers for NJEA Convention in Atlantic City, NJ
  • Nov. 18: Volunteers needed for NJ Walks for TS in North Jersey
