"Love Your Library" Bill Now Law!
Governor Cuomo has signed A.1094-A Galef / S.3023-A Ritchie into law! Affectionately known as the "tax check-off bill," this law amends New York State Tax Law to permit income taxpayers to make contributions directly into the state "Love Your Library Fund" when completing their annual tax filings.

Monies from the "Love Your Library Fund" are used exclusively to support the annual New York Statewide Summer Reading Program.

This same legislation was vetoed in 2010, along with several related bills. The passage of this bill marks the first time since those 2010 vetoes that a tax check-off bill has been signed into law by the Governor.

MHLS would like to thank the New York Library Association (NYLA) and all of the library advocates that worked hard to contact the Governor this summer to help get this bill signed into law!

Stay tuned for a simple way to say thank you to the Governor for this action in the coming days from NYLA.

Eclipse Parties! Member Libraries from around the System got into the Solar Eclipse craze last week by distributing eclipse glasses provided by NASA, teaching people how to make their own eclipse viewing devices and by hosting eclipse "viewing parties"! Demand far outpaced the supply of eclipse glasses in the region but libraries worked together to do their best and when the day came it was a chance for communities to practice sharing! The Red Hook Public Library reported that they had 250 pairs of glasses and over 1,400 people showed up for their viewing party!

Congratulations to Liz Potter, Director of the Phoenicia Library and Kristin Charles-Scaringi, Adult & Teen Services Librarian at the Kingston Library! They have both received NYLA Conference Scholarships from the Public Library Section of the New York Library Association!

Tivoli Free Library offers "Go Back in Time Story Hour" at local historic site! Last week the Tivoli Free Library took the show on the road and held story hour at the Clermont State Historic Site. At the gathering children and their parents gathered to listen to some of the same stories the many generations of children who lived at Clermont loved over the years.

Olive Free Library's brand new bookmobile, created from a former MHLS delivery van, is now in action!

Launch of the 2017 DA21 Report: Meaningful Access to Information To Leave No One Behind
If you are looking for some new talking points about why libraries matter, check out the new Development and Access to Information (DA2I) Report from the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA): https://da2i.ifla.org/ The report shows how essential access to information is for development of communities, and makes the case for coordinated and sustained efforts by all to guarantee it. It demonstrates how meaningful access to information, supported by libraries, contributes to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals [ http://bit.ly/1Kjkn0B]
Did you know? OverDrive, the vendor that provides our ebooks and downloadable audiobooks was recently certified as a B Corporation. This certification acknowledges the company's commitment to social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. What is a Certified B Corporation? Similar to what Fair Trade Certified is to coffee, Certified B Corporations are for-profit companies that use the power of business to meet rigorous social, workforce and environmental standards. It is a commitment as a business to be accountable and help solve many of the social and environmental challenges that we face today. From the beginning of OverDrive, it has been extremely important to us to be socially and environmentally responsible. Not only is it the right thing to do, it aligns with the mission of our library and school partners to support communities while championing education, reading and literacy."
