Last year WAMPO received a $2,000 grant from the Knight Foundation Fund at the Wichita Community Foundation to support our Annual Bicycle & Pedestrian Count Event. Based on feedback from our 2016 volunteer survey, the project focus was directed at technology that would support and encourage the participation of the count event volunteers.
We would like to introduce you to ActiveICT! This new and exciting mobile application funded in part by the Knight Foundation Fund at the Wichita Community Foundation supports the active transportation, wellness and civic engagement activities of WAMPO, Health ICT, and Wichita Parks & Recreation.
The vision and development of this mobile app would not have been possible without the partnerships and support from Health ICT, Ennovar at WSU, the City of Wichita, Visual Graphics, Open Wichita, and Bike Walk Wichita.
More than just a WAMPO Annual Bicycle & Pedestrian Count event app, this app supports Walktober and Open Streets ICT, with plans on the horizon for additional event and project integration!

Federal Transit Administration
This past August, FTA released a new manual on Pedestrian and
Bicycle
Connections to Transit. This manual provides a collection of best practices for transit and other transportation professionals looking to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety and access to transit among other things.

WAMPO 2016 Annual Repor

In 2016, the WAMPO organization laid the ground work needed to develop regional transportation priorities and plans for the future.
A tremendous amount of work was done to identify and analyze the trends that impact and intersect with our lives and transportation system every day.

Regional Highlight:
Wichita Transit
Helping Kids Get to School
Wichita Transit is running a pilot project this fall semester providing alternative
transportation to middle and high school students.
The program is designed for students that live within the school district
"walk boundary" and are ineligible for school bus transportation, the program allows these students to
obtain a reduced fare bus pass for the Wichita Transit fixed route buses.

The program provides a convenient before and after school service to nearby neighborhoods not currently served by school buses.
Unlimited ride passes are available at the Downtown Transit Center (214 S. Topeka in Wichita) for $20 per month or $75 for a full semester.
As part of the program, Wichita Transit is also re-routing specific routes twice a day to pick up students at designated bus stops. The schools participating in the pilot program are Coleman, Curtis, Hamilton and Robinson Middle Schools, and East, North and West High Schools.
Program Update!
Through September, 55 passes have been sold, accounting for 1,139 rides! Wichita Transit officials report that some students are choosing to pay the cash fare, and others have shared their plans to use the service once the weather makes walking to school less favorable.

2017 Bicycle & Pedestrian Count

The 6th Annual Bicycle and Pedestrian Count was held this past September 21st and 23rd.
Each year this event provides a meaningful opportunity for local community members to have direct influence on the transportation decision-making process.
This year, with the help of over 50 volunteers, WAMPO was able to successfully capture
valuable data in estimating the bicycle and pedestrian usage at identified locations around the region.
Without the assistance of these dedicated volunteers, this important work would not have been done, so here is a big THANK YOU to those who served!

Recent Approvals & Amendments
Thanks to all who assisted us in reviewing our proposed documents and sharing your perspectives on the regional transportation system over these past few months.
On August 8th, the Transportation Policy Body (TPB) adopted the following documents:
- MOVE 2040 Amendment #2: To view a summary of the changes associated with the amendment click here.
- 2017 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) Amendment #3: The TIP is a short-range program that identifies transportation projects to be implemented during the next 4 years. Click here to see the newly adopted version.
- Voting Member Expansion on the TAC: Like most communities, the WAMPO region is facing significant changes in the way we work, live, move goods and services, as well as, how we finance certain types of improvements. As a result of these changes, and considering the economics of transportation related planning development and construction, the Transportation Policy Body voted to expand the voting members of the Transportation Advisory Committee to include an Economist, Technologist, an Urban land use planning and development trend expert, a Public Health representative, and a Railroad Freight representative.
