Dear Friends,

We would like to thank everyone who attended our 34th Annual Conference at the beginning of this month! We had a fantastic four days at the Chicago Marriott Naperville. Photos from the conference are up on our website -- check them out.

SENG's Conference is always a joyful week for the gifted community. For a few precious days, we have a safe haven; a network of people who understand us. SENG is hoping to keep that much-needed connection alive through our SENG Connect support groups!

Starting in September, these ONLINE discussion groups will be offered,  similar to SENG Model Parenting Groups that are facilitated in person. Gifted young adults, Europeans, and parents are invited to join our themed groups - READ MORE on our website and register today!

In gratitude,

Dr. Michael Postma
Interim Executive Director of SENG

Discovering the Gifted Ex-Child
by Stephanie Tolan

The experience of the gifted adult is the experience of an unusual consciousness, an extraordinary mind whose perceptions and judgments may be different enough to require an extraordinary courage. Large numbers of gifted adults, aware not only of their mental capacities but of the degree to which those capacities set them apart, understand this.

For many, however, a complete honoring of the self must begin with discovering what sort of consciousness, what sort of mind they possess. That their own perceptions and judgments are unusual may have been obvious since childhood, but they may have spent their lives assuming that this difference was a deficit, a fault, even a defect of character or a sign of mental illness.  More...
Growing Old Gifted
by Annemarie Roeper

Much has been said, written, and researched about gifted children and adolescents. Yet there is a dearth of information when it comes to the gifted adult, and giftedness in old age has yet to be mentioned at all. There are many stories about old people: about their loneliness, their surprising longevity, and their ability to continue to participate in social life. In other words, much is said about how they stay young, but not much about how they actually grow old. I've seen many people get old and die. Yet I don't really know what old age is anymore.  More...
Androgyny and Gifted Youth
by Danae Deligeorge

What is psychological androgyny? Results of a Google search indicate an array of possibilities: simply wearing clothing usually associated with the opposite sex; having traditional male and female roles obscured or reversed; the state of being neither distinguishably masculine nor feminine as in dress, appearance, or behavior.

How is androgyny connected to giftedness and creativity? According to Silverman (1993), Tolan (1997), Sheely (2000), Piirto (2004), Kerr (1997), Kerr & Cohn (2001) many highly gifted and creative children tend to be androgynous.  More...
How to Charm Gifted Adults into Admitting Giftedness: Their Own and Somebody Else's
by Willem Kuipers

In my current experience and view, the biggest "social issue of the gifted" is the painful misfit between implicit beliefs about giftedness by the non-gifted and the gifted alike and the actual or perceived reality of very many gifted adults.

That misfit leads to utter loneliness: It impedes the sharing of one's deep feelings and experiences related to giftedness with others because of the belief that these have nothing to do with being gifted More...

Running to Stand Still, a song performed by U2 is, and has been, a favorite of mine since college.  I remember the lyrics resonating deeply within me then - so much emotion, desire and frustration.

Now, with U2's 2017 Joshua Tree Tour (and getting to see them live twice!) I am contemplating the relevance of this song to my experience as a parent, and in mentoring parents of twice exceptional children and 2e adults. The lyrics illustrate the lonely and often frustrating journey of parenting a 2e child or being a 2e adult; awakening to the realization of necessary and sometimes onerous advocacy and the final appreciation that even after a journey of learning and promoting best practices, we may find ourselves standing in the same place as when we started.  With all our efforts people continue to misunderstand our children or our own life experience. In the end, we must remain true to ourselves, drive our own destiny and teach our children to recognize and celebrate their strengths and gifts. More...
