Winter Fest
Save the Date 
Presented by: The City of Walker, Kent District Library Walker Branch, and Walker Ice and Fitness Center
 
Thursday, November 30, 5:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Enjoy an evening of free ice skating, reindeer, hot chocolate, kids crafts, holiday music, and our 7:00 p.m. tree lighting. Santa will also be visiting from the North Pole!  Event will be held at the Walker Ice & Fitness Center (4151 Remembrance Rd. NW.). We encourage you to bring your own ice skates. Rental skates will be available for free on a first come basis. 
 
Please help us spread some  holiday cheer by bringing a canned good item to donate to our local food bank. Our Youth Commission will be collecting donations at the entrance. For more information or to sponsor these events, please contact [email protected].

Biodegradable bags will be made available for purchase at the Public Works office (call for current pricing)
8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday - Thursday. We will sell the bags at the site Wednesday nights and Saturdays.
To speed up the leaf drop off, we encourage the use of the biodegradable bags. Plastic bags are not accepted.
If plastic bags are used, the resident will be required to dump their leaves out of the plastic bags. Also,
residents may bring leaves in a tarped trailer.

We will also be accepting brush at this location and running them through a chipper. No minimum length
required. Proof of Walker residency will be required. Our offices are located at 4243 Remembrance Rd. N.W.
directly across from the Library entrance. Office hours are Monday -Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and

Upcoming Elections
The City General Election is November 7, 2017. The last day to register to vote for this election is October 10, 2017. Register at the Clerk's office or any Secretary of State branch. Click here for more information.

Absentee Ballots
Prior to each election, voters may choose to receive their ballot by mail. Michigan law allows you to receive an absentee ballot if:
  • You are 60 years of age or older
  • You are physically unable to attend the polls without assistance of another
  • You have been appointed an election precinct inspector in a precinct other than the precinct where you reside
  • You expect to be absent from the community in which you are registered for the entire time the polls are open on election day
  • You cannot attend the polls because of the tenets of your religion
  • You cannot attend the polls because you are confined to jail awaiting arraignment or trial
Absentee Ballots are available in the Clerk's Office approximately 45 days prior to the election. Call the office for an application or stop in to complete the form. Please know that Absentee Ballot
APPLICATIONS can be forwarded to a temporary address by the Post Office. However, Absentee
BALLOTS cannot be forwarded to another address by the Post Office. It is vital we know where to mail your absentee ballot so it does not get lost in the mail system! Click here for an Absentee Ballot Application.

Permanent Absentee Voter
If you are over 60 years old, you qualify to be on our Permanent Absentee Voter List which means you will automatically receive an Application to Vote prior to each Election. You then complete the application and return it to the Clerk's Office to receive your ballot. Contact the Clerk's Office if you wish to be on this list. If you already receive an application, you are already on the list and do not need to contact us again.

Passports
You can apply for a passport in the Clerk's Office. No appointments are necessary during Passport Office Hours which are Monday - Thursday from 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Friday from 7:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Visit our website for details on passport requirements.

City Hall Drop Box
Any documents you need to turn into the Clerk's office may be dropped off in the City Hall grey drop box outside City Hall. (i.e. Absentee ballot applications, signed and sealed absentee ballots and any license applications and payments).

Walker Fire Department
Rules for Open Burning with Permit

In accordance with the Code of Ordinances for the City of Walker, Chapter 34 (Environment), Section 34-55  (Open Burning), listed below are the rules and regulations for the City's Open Burning Policy:
  • Residential burning is allowed twice a year. The burning season begins on April 15 through May 15 and October 15 through November 15. 
  • Burning permits are free and can be obtained at the main reception area at the Walker City Hall. 
  • You will be required to show your valid Michigan driver's license when applying for your burning permit. 

If you do obtain a permit, the following rules will apply:

  • You may only burn on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays during the burning season.
  • You must notify City Hall every time you burn. Please call 616.453.6311 between 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Friday. Please notify City Hall on Friday by 11:30 a.m. if you intend to burn on Saturday.
  • The burning of leaves and grass clippings is prohibited.
  • You are only allowed to burn small twigs.
  • ABSOLUTELY NO COMMERCIAL BURNING (Contractors, businesses, clearing land, etc.).
  • Burning of garbage, rubbish or any other solid waste is also prohibited.
  • Open burning shall be supervised and kept under control by an adult who shall be present at the site of the fire at all times and until the fire is completely extinguished without smoldering.
  • Fire extinguishing equipment must be readily available at the site of the fire. 
  • A supply of water must be available in the immediate vicinity of the fire.
  • Open burning is not permitted within 50 feet of any building or overhead wires.
  • Open burning is not permitted in any public street.
  • Open burning is not permitted in ditches or drainage courses other than the burning of natural vegetation growing therein (with permission from the Fire Department).
  • No burning in trash barrels or other containers.
  • Burning is not allowed until sunrise and must be extinguished by sunset.
  • Materials to be burned must be dry and readily combustible. The fire must be small and no black smoke is permitted.
  • Burning is not allowed when the wind is over 20 mph.
  • You must renew your burning permit every spring.
Lastly, if the Fire Department is called to your address because of a complaint from smoke or odor from your fire, and if our responding fire officer determines that your burning is causing a health hazard or nuisance to your neighbors, you will be asked to extinguish your fire.

Veteran's Day Donation Drive
Veteran's Day is November 10, help us celebrate by helping us give back to our local Veterans. This year we will be collecting donations for our local Veteran's home starting November 1, 2017.

  • Individually wrapped chips

We will have a donation table set up in our fitness area or you can drop off items to our front desk staff at Walker Ice & Fitness.
