Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD): How to Make Sense of Challenging Behaviors 

This presentation will describe the process of diagnostic clarification for youth with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)/ neurodevelopmental disorder and co-occurring mental health diagnosis within the context of an interdisciplinary diagnostic team. It is important to understand the contribution of a youth’s neurobiology and developmental profile relative to the presentation of difficult behaviors to ensure that recommended treatment and strategies are appropriate, effective and ethical. The presenters will provide an overview of conceptual models that address social competency and emotional regulation within the context of daily interactions and activities, emphasizing the importance of using strategies that reflect the youth’s developmental level and appreciation of the neurobiological profile, including sensory processing abilities.

The learning goals and objectives include:
  1. Describe the diagnostic clarification process for youth with or suspected as having an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as part of an interdisciplinary team evaluation.
  2. Provide the conceptual framework for how to identify a youth’s neurobiological and developmental profile social competency and emotional regulation.
  3. Provide specific interactional and environmental strategies that can be utilized to improve social communication, sensory processing and emotional regulation abilities within the context of everyday activities.

Presented by Mary Beth Kadlec, ScD, OTR/L & Susan Swanson MA, CCC-SLP. Susan brings a wealth of clinical instruction, training and professional experience, as well as her experience in private practice as a Consulting Speech/Language Pathologist. Susan has a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Pathology, American Speech and Hearing Association Certification and is a Licensed Speech Language Pathologist, State of Massachussetts. Susan participates as a member of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association, the Language, Learning and Education Group, and a member of the Massachusetts Association of Speech Language Hearing Association.
