SPECIAL ACTIVITIES
Pledge of Allegiance
Girl Scouts from Troop 3239 led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Morris School Presentation
Morris sixth graders, with their teacher Mrs. Moore, presented an overview of some project-based learning activities related to Newton's Laws of Motion, including an egg drop experiment.

Special Education Review
Scott Adams, Director of Student Support Services, provided the Board with an overview of the Fiscal Crisis Management and Assistance Team (FCMAT) review of the district's Special Education program that was performed in May 2017. 
  
English Language Arts/English Language Development Curriculum Adoption
Tandy Taylor, Director of Instructional Services, provided an update on the district's English language arts/English language development textbook pilot and adoption process. The district is piloting McGraw-Hill Wonders and Benchmark Advance.
BOARD ACTIONS
Professional Development for Classified Staff
The Board approved contracting with Partnership for Education and Professional Development for two full-day training sessions for school classified staff focusing on instructional strategies, behavior management, and behavior response for all students. The cost for both sessions is $3,500.
 
Club King
The Board approved acceptance of an additional $31,050 in After School Education and Safety (ASES) grant funding, along with an amended Memorandum of Understanding with the Boys & Girls Club of Cypress, for operation of the Club King program at King School through June 30, 2020.
 
New Job Description and Position
A new Teacher on Special Assignment-Behavior/Inclusion Specialist Position, replacing a previous Program Specialist administrative position, was approved by the Board. This position will provide support to staff and students in the special education program.
 
Employee Health Insurance
The district contracts with the California Schools Voluntary Employees Benefits Association (VEBA) for its employee health insurance. The Board approved renewing the contract with VEBA for the upcoming 2018 plan year. The premium renewal rates reflect the following increases from 2017: Kaiser HMO +2.8%, United Healthcare HMO +5.6%, and United Healthcare PPO +5.2%.
 
State One-Time Discretionary Funding
The Board approved the following budget plan for $558,239 in one-time discretionary funding the district will receive from the state for 2017/18:  
 

- Technology Equipment (Teacher Devices & Smartboards) $518,239

- Professional Development (Induction Program & Teacher Support) $40,000

INFORMATION / DISCUSSION
Williams Uniform Complaints
The Board received a report indicating the district received no complaints regarding deficiencies related to instructional materials, emergency or urgent facilities conditions, or teacher vacancies or misassignments during the first quarter of the 2017/18 school year.
 
Process for Electing Board Officers
The Board reviewed its process for electing Board officers, which takes place annually during the organizational meeting in December.
