With bicycle travel rising rapidly, many municipalities feel a pressing need to reexamine their policies governing this environmentally friendly mode of travel. Many cities including Washington, DC, Portland, San Francisco, and Chicago have seen a more than 300% increase in bike commuting over the past 25 years. This webinar will offer discussion related to the relative speed of bike travel in densely-populated urban areas and explore how municipalities and states can modernize their policies to facilitate this mode of travel.
Webinar Agenda
Colorado-based attorney and policy expert, Alex Logemann of People for Bikes, will lead things off by describing legislation and policies that ensure bike manufacturers meet regulatory requirements. Alex will also discuss e-bike programs, as well as state and local funding avenues.
Policy analyst, Jenna Caldwell, will share insights from her research into the innovative "Idaho Stop Law" that offers bicyclists flexibility at stop signs and lights. Jenna will also review enforcement trends as part of her analysis of bike codes in 30 communities throughout Illinois, which will be featured in the forthcoming Illinois Municipal Policy Journal.
Finally, DePaul researchers will showcase the results of newly-collected data comparing the travel times associated with bicycling, public transit and ridesharing in Chicago.
As always, we'll reserve ample time for Q&A.
