Greetings!

As the season of Thanksgiving is upon us, we wanted to take this moment to thank you. Thank you for being a supporter of NADRA. We  love our industry! We get to provide fun & safe environments for families and friends to spend more time outdoors. We sell fun! How cool is that?

Let’s resolve as the industry’s association to work together better; to be willing to step up, and to reach out to others whenever possible to continue our collective education and best practices. Let's work together and explore opportunities to “grow the pie” we all feed our families with.

We have so many incredible opportunities available through NADRA to get involved! Give the friendly folks at HQ a call, or drop them an email, or visit them at the show in Nashville next week (Booth #552). Let’s see what we can do to work together, and help each other grow.
Sincerely,

Your home team here at NADRA and your Board of Directors

What inspired you to join NADRA?  I have been in the BM industry for many years, mainly as a manufacturers representative. When I opened my business, I knew the value of being a member of NADRA and believe wholeheartedly in the message. I am passionate about the decking industry and try to instill that when meeting with potential customers.

When did you first get involved with this industry?  2001 as a sales rep in a lumberyard

What was the first thing you ever built?  The first thing inbuilt was a dog house for my dog - Jordan. I was 14. This was a piece of art.

We want to get to know you, please tell us a little about your business:  I started Western Sky Designs in 2015, primarily as a design and consultation company to earn extra income. As I went through the process, I realized my experience with many manufacturers would translate nicely into a full time career. Our specialty is custom decks, rail, and shade structures. We are passionate about building decks correctly and safely. This year we will build about 30 decks. In addition to patio covers and custom pergolas. We will also complete 5-10 basements per year.

How do you define success?  Success to me is personal relationships with my family and my friends. I have spent a lot of time on airplanes and traveling to help companies succeed. But at the end of the day, relationships with the people who I care about the most is the most important.

What advice would you like to share with fellow members that you have learned in your career?  We aren't competing against one another - we are building an industry. Let's work together and help each other.

If you could ask your fellow industry professionals one question, what might it be?  What kind of beer do you drink? Can I get you one?

The Scenario Perched on a 23-degree mountainside slope that receives some of the heaviest snowfall near Lake Tahoe, an enthusiastic outdoors-adventuring couple created their version of the ideal mountain retreat complete with: concrete patio rappelling wall, built-in bunk beds accessible via rock-climbing holds, ski pole chandelier and bobsled run access directly from the kitchen area. And despite all these fun, Nordic sports-themed design elements – it was the juxtaposition of the home’s textured metal accents like: corrugated metal roofing and a black powder-coated railing system contrasting the all-natural Douglas Fir siding and ceilings that helped make the entire project meld together amidst the rugged terrain.
Leadership:
ROUTINE & RHYTHM
Discipline in the routine will eventually shine through when it's time to march!

Friends, I have never played in a marching band, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the end product of countless hours of practice, determination and bond. For spectators like me, there is something magical about the rhythm of the entire unit. However we must recognize that the team's success truly lies within their routine

Let's explore 5 key characteristics that could make our own teams amazing:
#1 Unselfishness - Individual instincts and desires must often be sacrificed for the team. No one is off-beat, no one is off-key, no one is out-of-step. As Patanjali says, "When a gifted team dedicates itself to unselfish trust and combines instinct with boldness and effort, it is ready to climb." Too often in life and in business, selfish interests creep into our teams and cause us to collectively stumble.

Why Treated Wood?
Or, would it be better to ask, Why Not Treated Wood?
Brought to you by Lonza Wood Protection

Why Wood?
Wood products are everywhere. And it’s no wonder. Wood is, after all, nature’s sustainable building block that comes from an abundant natural resource easily and quickly replenished. It has excellent workability in all aspects of construction and, when preserved and used properly, can be designed to create outdoor living spaces that bring the inside out.

Wood is a sustainable product that is responsibly sourced from managed forest lands. That means trees used in the building industry come from forests grown as crops – much like corn or soy is grown. They are harvested. The land is left to rest for a few months. Then it is replanted at the rate of 400...
