Wesleyan To Celebrate Founder's Day Thursday, October 19

Joan Maxwell, co-owner of boat manufacturer Regulator Marine, will deliver North Carolina Wesleyan College's Founder's Day address. The celebration of the College's 61st anniversary of its founding will be held at 10 AM Thursday, October 19 in Minges Auditorium of the Dunn Center for the Performing Arts.

In 1988, Joan and her husband, Owen, set out to build one boat. With the boat design in Owen's head, they hired two naval architects and set up shop in an abandoned A&P Grocery Store in Edenton, NC. That boat became their flagship boat - the 26-foot Regulator. Today they operate out of an 80,000 square foot manufacturing facility, and Regulator is one of the most respected brands in the boating industry,

"We are excited to have Joan as our Founder's Day keynote speaker," said Wesleyan President Dr. Dewey Clark. "She is highly respected for her integrity and positive leadership in the manufacturing world as well as her faith, generosity and service to her community and church."

Maxwell grew up in Fairfield, NC. She graduated from Mattamuskeet High School and earned a bachelor's degree in history from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Reindeer Dash For Cash 10 Miler And 5K Scheduled

The 13th annual Reindeer Dash for Cash 10 Miler & 5K run will be held Sunday, December 3, 2017 at 1 PM in Greenville, NC. The ten mile course runs along the beautiful Greenville greenway and through the campus of East Carolina University.

This patriotic, Christmas-themed run is a fundraising event to benefit the Captain Christopher Cash Memorial Foundation of NC, Inc. All proceeds are awarded as college scholarships at NC Wesleyan College, East Carolina University, and NCNG Association Educational Foundation. Each year, the foundation offers deserving students the financial assistance needed to pursue a higher education and the accompanying rewards of learning and character development achieved through hard work and dedication of earning a professional degree.

Captain Christopher Cash graduated cum laude from North Carolina Wesleyan College with a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education in 1993. In October 2003, he was mobilized in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as the Commander of Company A, 1st Battalion, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Enhanced Separate Infantry Brigade. As a Company Commander, he led three platoons, and his soldiers provided support and protection to Iraqi citizens. On June 24, 2004, Iraqi insurgents ambushed Captain Cash's 3rd platoon. Focused on the safety of his men before his own, he ordered them to take cover. Captain Cash was mortally wounded by a machine gunner on top of a nearby building.On June 24, 2004, Christopher S. Cash, made the ultimate sacrifice while serving his country in Iraq.

During his lifetime, Chris was committed to helping others: his family, his friends, his co-workers, his community, and his country. His memory remains ever present in the hearts and minds of those he touched and inspired with his care and generosity.

2017 Alumni Award Recipients Honored

North Carolina Wesleyan College recognized an elite group of alumni during Homecoming 2017 weekend. Several distinguished alumni were honored based on their personal accomplishments, achievements in business, continued financial support of the College, as well as for their outstanding loyalty and service to their alma mater. Presenting the awards on behalf of North Carolina Wesleyan College were Eddie Coats '87, Vice President of Advancement; Rebekah Cain '13, Director of Alumni Relations and Dr. Samantha McAuliffe-Raynor '05, President of the Alumni Board and a Board of Trustee member.

Rotary Club Presents Funds From Tackle The Tar

Members of the Rocky Mount Rotary Club recently presented a check to NC Wesleyan College from funds the club raised during its Tackle the Tar Mud Run & Fun Day. Funds will be used to fund scholarships for students.

Earn Your Political Science Degree

You can now earn your degree in Political Science through the Adult Studies program at NC Wesleyan College. The major coursework is offered online.

Exercise Science Program Completes Accreditation Process

The NC Wesleyan Exercise Science Program recently completed the last step in a national exercise science (EXS) program-specific accreditation process. The accreditor is the Committee on Accreditation for the Exercise Sciences which was established in 2004 and is under the auspices of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). When accredited, the Wesleyan Exercise Science program will be the second accredited program in the state of North Carolina aside from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and only the 55th accredited program in the nation!

Alumni Spotlight

Rocky Mount Fireman Darvin Moore '16

Darvin Moore '16 completed his Business Administration degree through the Adult and Professional Studies program at NC Wesleyan while working full-time for the Rocky Mount Fire Department. He is an active member of the Alpha Omicron Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. When Darvin is not at the fire station or with his fraternity brothers, he is probably out enjoying a sporting or motorsports event.

When asked what he loves about being a Battling Bishop, Darvin said, "I have truly enjoyed the relationships I have developed with the students and faculty of the college. This experience has made the journey to achieving my degree pleasant and conducive to learning. I consider NC Wesleyan family."

Putting his Bishop degree to great use, Darvin has excelled in his career and was promoted to Battalion Chief of Operations. Darvin said, "North Carolina Wesleyan provided me with a high-quality education and this has allowed me to enhance my knowledge and skills to achieve excellence in my career in fire service." In November 2016, Darvin was the recipient of the EMS Life Saving Award.

Faculty/Staff Spotlight

Dr. Meir Magal, FACSM, Program Coordinator Exercise Science

Now in his 16th year at NC Wesleyan College, Dr. Meir Magal is Program Coordinator and Associate Professor of Exercise Science.

A native of Tel-Aviv, Israel, Dr Magal completed all his degrees at the University of Southern Mississippi. He played tennis for the Division 1 school while he was an undergraduate.

Since arriving at Wesleyan, Magal has directed and co-directed ten honor thesis, and together with students published 17 related peer-reviewed abstracts. In 2011, Dr. Magal became a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and in 2013 was awarded the Jefferson-Pilot Professorship Award.

"First and foremost and as an educator, I measure success by assessing the success of my students. Many of our graduates became successful exercise physiologists, coaches, educators, registered nurses and physical therapists," said Magal.

"The EXS program has strong ties to the College and the Rocky Mount communities. Every semester, as part of the practicum experience of the EXS students (EXS 480), we offer personal training opportunities for faculty and staff. Since 2007, EXS students have trained more than 350 faculty and staff members on campus and were involved in more than 52,000 training hours! Our students are also involved in the community in different capacities as they also have to complete 200 hours of internship work (EXS 481). In recent years, our students have been involved with the Rocky Mount Senior Center, the Harrison Family YMCA, Nash Hospitals, Rocky Mount Academy, Rocky Mount Parks and Recreation Department and other employers around Rocky Mount," said Magal.

In his spare time, Dr. Magal enjoys spending time with his family and playing sports.

Student Spotlight

Freshman Natalie Larson Says Wesleyan Is A Blessing

Natalie Larson is a freshman from Conifer, Colorado, a small town located in the mountains 45 minutes west of Denver. She is double majoring in Psychology and Sociology with a minor in Christian M

inistries or Religious Studies. Her goal is to graduate in the spring of 2021 with her Bachelors degree.

When Natalie arrived at NC Wesleyan, she became involved with Refuge (a student ministry) as a small group leader and is currently serving as co-president of the organization. She is also involved with S.E.A.M., which is a non-profit organization, and she plans on embarking on several mission trips with them starting next summer.

Natalie's favorite thing about Wesleyan is that it is a small school with great educators and staff. She loves the atmosphere of having a close-knit community and being able to know her professors, which is one of the main reasons she chose to attend Wesleyan. God made it clear to her that this was the school where she could thrive and grow. Her choice was sealed after visiting the campus in April, 2017.

After Natalie receives her Bachelors degree, she plans to go on the World Race, an eleven-month mission trip to eleven countries. She plans on obtaining her Masters in Social Work then getting involved with a non-profit organization internationally or locally that helps women out of sex trafficking. Her goal is to help others out of trafficking, into better lives, and help them with their spiritual walks with Christ.

Natalie said she loves NC Wesleyan and does not regret her decision to attend. She knows that God has so much in store for her and many of her friends over the next four years at Wesleyan. "This school is a blessing" Natalie said.
