Kaboom! Shazaam! The NBA's reigning MVP waited until the last minute to deliver his haymakers, scoring 17 of his 37 points in the fourth quarter and dispatching the tenacious Cleveland Cavs 104-91. Steph Curry left no doubt that he is deserving of the award, despite LeBron James' brilliance. Game Six of the NBA Championship takes place Tuesday night in Cleveland at 6 p.m. Photo by Rich Yee. |

One of the biggest success stories for the Giants this year has been the outstanding play of left fielder Nori Aoki, who continues to blister the ball and is hitting a team-leading 325. Aoki knows the Giants well, having been a member of last year's Kansas City Royals, who fell to the Giants in the World Series. Photo by Rich Yee. |

"I feel we're all overpaid. Every professional athlete is overpaid. I got a phenomenal contract -- much more money than I ever thought I'd make. I wouldn't say I'm embarrassed by it, but deep down I know I'm not worth it. To my shame, though, I have to admit I asked for it."

Triple Crowns on Two and Four Legs
by Andy Dolich
|
I grew up in suburban Valley Stream, N.Y., which is about three Belmont Park laps from that iconic 1.5-mile racetrack in nearby Elmont. I left Long Island in 1970 to begin my journey through the world of sports, and since that time only three Triple Crown winners had been crowned -- until last Saturday: Secretariat in 1973, Seattle Slew in 1977 and Affirmed in 1978.
I may have skipped a few afternoon classes at South High School to blow my measly after-school job salary, but I never made it to Belmont to see a Triple Crown winner.
As American Pharoah raced down the backstretch and into history as the 12th horse to win the Triple Crown, my mind switched to the other Triple Crown, which ironically featured a ball covered in horsehide until 1974, one year after the great Secretariat blew away the competition.
Baseball's first of its 17 Triple Crown winners was Paul Hines of the Providence Grays in 1878. Sir Barton became the first thoroughbred to win the four-legged crown in 1919.
There are two baseball winners who have won twice: Ted Williams and Rogers Hornsby.
In 1937 a thoroughbred on the ball field and at the track both won -- Joe Medwick (St. Louis Cardinals) and War Admiral share that rare coincidental piece of history. The year 1933 was the only year the National and American leagues crowned Triple Crown winners from the same city (Philadelphia): Jimmie Foxx of the American League's Athletics and Chuck Klein of the National League's Phillies.
New York, home of Belmont Park, produced two Triple Crown winners: Lou Gehrig in 1934 and Mickey Mantle in 1956. Baltimore, home of the Preakness, saw Frank Robinson take the coveted title in 1966.
Was it just a coincidence this year that baseball Hall of Famer Joe Torre, an honorary announcer at Belmont, made the traditional "riders up" call to the jockeys?
Longtime sports executive Andy Dolich has more than three decades of experience in the professional sports industry, mostly spent in the San Francisco Bay Area. This includes stints in the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL. He operates his consulting business, Dolich & Associates, in Los Altos.

The 11-time California League champion San Jose Giants' 2015 season is off to an exciting start. With a prospect-laden roster and an exciting lineup of theme nights, there will be no better place to spend spring and summer this year than Municipal Stadium.
Former first-round draft picks Christian Arroyo and Tyler Beede highlight the Giants roster. Arroyo won the Arizona Rookie League Most Valuable Player award in his first professional season before hitting an impressive .333 with five home runs and 48 RBIs in 58 games for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes last year. Beede, the 14th overall pick in last June's draft, anchors the Giants' starting rotation. Beede had a standout career at Vanderbilt University, earning First Team All-American honors as a sophomore in 2013, then helping the Commodores to the College World Series title last year.
Luis Ysla, Keury Mella and Chase Johnson, each regarded among the top pitching prospects in the organization, will join Beede in the San Jose starting rotation. Beede (No. 2), Mella (No. 4), Arroyo (No. 10), Johnson (No. 20) and Ysla (No. 21) are all ranked among the top prospects in the Giants organization by Baseball America entering this season.
San Jose's talented lineup includes returning first baseman Brian Ragira and outfielders Tyler Horan and Jesus Galindo. Ragira led the 2014 San Jose Giants in home runs (20) and RBIs (82), to go with a .260 batting average. He hit 15 of his home runs after the All-Star break last year. Horan hit 25 home runs between Augusta and San Jose last season to rank second in the San Francisco farm system. After earning midseason South Atlantic League All-Star honors last year, Horan was promoted to San Jose, where he blasted 10 homers in just 28 games. Galindo served as San Jose's leadoff hitter and center fielder for most of last season and hit .268, with team-leading totals of 31 stolen bases and eight triples.
Third baseman Ryder Jones and second baseman Austin Slater are playing leading roles on the club. Jones, a second-round draft pick in 2013, amassed 26 doubles, 10 home runs and 67 RBIs between Augusta and Salem-Keizer last season. After his selection in the eighth round of the 2014 draft, Slater debuted professionally last summer with Salem-Keizer, leading the Volcanoes with a .347 batting average.
The San Jose Giants' 2015 special events and promotional calendar is filled with a number of new giveaways and theme nights along with the return of many fan favorites. Highlights of the schedule include Buster Posey Bank Giveaway (May 24); Giants Replica World Series Ring Giveaway (June 6, presented by TiVo); Madison Bumgarner MVP Bobblehead Giveaway (June 19); Joe Panik Bobblehead Giveaway (July 10, presented by Alliance Credit Union); Brandon Crawford Bobblehead Giveaway (Aug. 1, sponsored by Sheet Metal Workers' Local Union 104 and the Santa Clara Valley Contractors Association); Travis Ishikawa Bobblehead Giveaway (Aug. 2, presented by Kyoto Palace); and Gigante Bobblehead Giveaway (Aug. 23, courtesy of Pepsi).
Be part of the San Jose Giants experience this season at Municipal Stadium, and be sure to follow the team on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat for all the latest news.
