  MMAC Pres. Newsletter Message,  August 2017

I hope many of you had an opportunity to observe the solar eclipse. I set up my telescope and entertained the neighbors and their kids for a few hours. It was a nice departure from my every day routine to see Mother Nature put on a spectacular show.
Speaking of Mother Nature, it seems that every time I've had a chance to fly this season, the wind has been a factor. Fortunately our recent Float Fly at the Milford Pond was a beautiful day with calm breezes that made for a very enjoyable day. We had a total of eight pilots. I want to thank Frank K. once again for being the event CD and to Mark S. for the loan of his canoe, which came in handy a few times to say the least!
Our next meeting will be at the American Legion in Millis on Tuesday, August 29 at 7:30 pm. 
I also want to remind everyone that our annual Bill O'Donnell Milford Fun Fly is on for this year. It is scheduled for Sunday, October 8. Hopefully the weather will cooperate this year. Last year we had to cancel because of rain. As in past years, we'll have open flying all day, so come out and enjoy the event and engage with the general public in helping to promote R/C flying. John Holcomb has taken over the CD job for day.
So far, Bill Martin Field remains in pretty good shape. Of course we've had to deal with some pesky hornets taking up residence in Billy's Barn.  I've been told that John Holcomb is pretty good with the bug spray?
I hope to see many of our members at our next meeting. So until then, remember, altitude and air speed are your friends. Happy flying!

Vice President's Report
August 2017

August is here and the days are getting shorter, but there is still lots of flying and special events as we begin looking towards the fall.  We conducted our second annual float plane fun fly in Milford on Saturday, August 12.  The weather cleared up in plenty of time and the conditions were favorable.  Unfortunately only a handful of people showed up to attend our event.  Perhaps some of you went out to Westfield and saw the warbird airshow at the Barnes airport?  Many of our flyers learned the hard way how unforgiving the water can be.  Thank goodness Mark Schultz volunteered the use of his canoe, as many rescues were required.  Also thanks to Frank Krcziuk for braking in his new CD status in hosting the event.  Perhaps we will have better luck going up to New Hampshire in September for the float plane fun fly at Greenfield State Park from September 15 th through the 17 th. ..  Check with the Southern New Hampshire Flying Eagles R/C Club Merrimack NH for more details.
 
I am now looking ahead to Milford day in October.  I regret that I will not be able to put on as good a show as Brad Kaye used to do, but with a little help from my friends I will try to do justice to the event.  I am hoping that some club members can chip in to that end.  Some possible ideas I have are:

Flying electric ducted fan (EDF) planes in a jet-like formation

Flying warbirds in formation

Demonstrating slow survivable radio controlled combat (SSRCC) planes in a simulated combat heat

Demonstrations of high-performance 3-D flying

Demonstration of high-performance helicopter flying (Raja)

 
Please contact me if you have a desire to participate in any of these potential events, or if you have suggestions of your own.
 
Of course we will also be doing our invitation for participation in buddy box training in the middle of the day.  I would like to have two or even three teams of instructor/helper MMAC pilots participating.  Our club has two E-Flite Apprentice trainer planes and one Nitro trainer plane.  Please contact me directly by e-mail or cell phone if you feel that you can offer your services for this.
 
Remember that SSRCC is holding the annual Bill O'Donnell Memorial Multi-club fly in on September 23 at their field in Bridgewater.

Old Business
 
The July meeting was the third of three in 2017 held at Bill Martin field.
 
Float fly - August 12 th .

Mickey Callahan  ran the  MMAC Float Plane Fun Fly on Saturday, August 12th at the Milford Plains park at the boat landing. BYOF (food) was the order of the day. I brought a canoe, same as last year, for a rescue boat. Hopefully it won't be needed. (NOT)
 I think everyone had fun, but the FF seemed to resemble a demolition derby as much as anything. Good thing we had a chase boat, it got lots of use.
 
I have a note about a Milford Youth Club telethon on August 19 th . Not clear from my note what if anything, our participation would be.
 
Motion made (and passed) to suspend raffle for the time being because of lack of attendance at the monthly meetings.


New Business        

Columbus day at plains park is coming up soon. The exec committee will be meeting in early Sept. to get the plans for the day kickstarted.
 
The winter banquet will be informal this year due to lack of participation last year. Most likely we will reserve a table at a restaurant (to be named).
 
John Holcomb has checked with Brad Kaye regarding is continuing participation in hosting Milford Day in October. Apparently he's out but may support us with logistics.
 
I would appreciate it if members of MMAC who did not participate in the June 3 rd fun fly or the August 12 th float fly drop me a note at [email protected] and let me know in a sentence or two why you missed the event. This is not meant to be punitive! The executive committee would like to plan activities that appeal to as broad a spectrum of members as possible, and feedback from the membership would be one way of accomplishing that.
 
Meeting adjourned at 7:30 PM due to fading light and bugs.
