IN  THIS ISSUE
This past September, all six graders from both Hillside and Meads Mill got to spend the day at the Detroit Zoo thanks to a grant from the Northville Educational Foundation. More than just a field trip, the Detroit Zoo provided a special program for the students that tied into their ecosystems curriculum.

When the students arrived, they were broken into groups. The groups got to visit two of six different animals, learn more about them from zoo staff, and study each of them in their environments. The animals included tigers, eagles, polar bears, Panamanian golden frogs, wolves and gorillas. Students completed a series of activities for each of the animals they visited.

For instance, at the gorillas, students participated in a graphing activity to see what factors (i.e. mining) affect a certain species' population. At the polar bears, students weighed stuffed polar bears to demonstrate how their weight has been declining in recent past due to climate change and the loss of ice caps where they hunt. At the eagles, they determined how DDT affects eagle eggs. Students placed weights on "normal" and "affected" eggs and compared how much weight each could hold. The eggs exposed to DDT were weaker.

At the tigers and wolves, they analyzed different animal tracks for predator and prey populations. They also looked at images of the tigers and wolves taken by camera traps to determine which individuals frequented certain areas. Finally, at the Panamanian golden frogs, the students learned to swab the frogs like real scientists do in order to detect Chytrid fungus.

Having the opportunity to learn about various ecosystems outside of the classroom helped the students better understand the concepts and definitions. Plus learning about the animals in more detail and seeing them more up close will be an experience they will remember for years and year to come.

The sixth graders will get to return to the zoo in the Spring to see more animals and participate in activities related to their biodiversity unit.
