Empowering Oklahoma's Women

The 2016 Empowering Oklahoma's Women Conference: You Are Not Alone took place on October 27th. Over 130 participants from a range of state and local agencies that work toward healthy birth and family outcomes attended the conference. This year's conference served to encompass the theme of You Are Not Alone by providing keynote addresses from local and national speakers on Postpartum Health and Wellness, Fatherhood, The Two-Generation Approach to Caregiving, and Intergenerational Adversity. Throughout the day participants were able to see how the whole family and whole community are important factors in providing the best care for women and their children. An evening event was held on October 26th to screen the documentary Dark Side of the Full Moon that gives a real view into the unseen world of postpartum depression and overall maternal mental health in the United States. Following the conference a follow-up meeting was held on November 3rd to invite the community back in to begin our We Are Together effort working on community solutions to Postpartum Depression in Tulsa, the meeting was attended by representatives from 29 local agencies. Shauna Meador was the Coordinator for this event.
Hosting Fellows

Community Service Council hosted several legislative fellows from World Learning for three weeks during October and November. The fellows attended meetings, provided input to our outcome and evaluation projects, shadowed staff and participated in a few fun cultural events including a visit to the Tulsa Zoo. This picture shows Karen Smith, Ajmal Elahi whose focus is evaluation of civil society work, Ambreen Sharif whose focus is on women, youth and children empowerment, Laura Ross White, Kendall McKicrick, and Feroza Narqvi whose focus is on domestic violence. The fellows were brought to Tulsa by Tulsa Global Alliance.
David Kirp Visit

NYT Writer, Professor of Public Policy at Berkeley and author of many books including "Kids First" visited with Center for Community School Strategies staff and McAuliffe Elementary full service community school families, children and staff.   Mr. Kirp was visiting Tulsa to research sustainable strategies for meeting the needs of children and families at the school site.  Pictured is Mr. Kirp being "interviewed" by the Newsletter Club at McAuliffe.  Click here for Mr. Kirp's most recent op-ed. Paige Whalen facilitated the event and tours.

National Representation

Melanie Poulter , Program Director for the Census Information Center (CIC) of Eastern Oklahoma and Chair of the Steering Committee for U.S. Census Bureau's CIC program, recently attended the two and a half day CIC Steering Committee meeting held at Census Bureau headquarters in Suitland, Maryland.  The CIC Steering Committee met with Census Bureau Director John Thompson along with others from the Census Bureau and the Steering Committee for the Bureau's State Data Center (SDC) program.  Presentations by and discussions with Census leadership included the 2020 Census integrated communications contract, the new Middle Eastern North African race classification, update on development of CEDSCI - Census Bureau's new comprehensive data dissemination tool, and the 2017 Economic Census.  The CIC Steering Committee prepared CIC goals for 2017, worked on a core competencies survey to be administered by the CIC Analysis work group to the entire CIC network this fall, discussed strategy for assisting with alleviating the undercount of children, examined gap analysis and possibility of expanding CIC program, and began planning the 2017 CIC network training conference.
Sharing Our Knowledge

Jan Figart presented a nationally televised webinar on October 25, "Improving the Health of Women, Children and Men: A Primer on Preventive Services Covered Under the Affordable Care Act" as part of the Healthy Start program. Healthy Start programs are an invaluable resource for women, children and men to increase their understanding of the preventive services covered under the Affordable Care Act. For example, did you know that comprehensive breastfeeding support and counseling from trained providers, and access to breastfeeding supplies, for pregnant and nursing women is a covered benefit under Marketplace health plans at no charge to the client? This webinar provided an overview of the preventive services that are covered for women, children and men. Given the substantial amount of content to cover the webinar has been divided up into three parts. The first webinar was live. The two subsequent webinars were recorded and available for listening shortly following the live webinar.
Community Health Fair

The Power of Families project in collaboration with the Coalition of Hispanic Organizations, Tulsa Public Schools, 5 health organizations and over fifty other service providers held a very successful Community Health Fair at Disney Elementary on October 15.  More than 600 individuals received health screenings including glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure screenings, hearing and vision screenings and flu shots.  Over 200 volunteers benefited from other activities, as well as gaining service hours needed for completing certificate/training programs.  The Power of Families Project promotoras planned and organized developmentally appropriate activities to engage with over ninety children.   Christina Starzyl-Mendoza coordinated the event.

Successful Baby Shower

Tulsa Health Department Healthy Start and the Community Service Council Healthy Start partnered together again to host the 2nd annual Community Baby Shower in September. Over 300 attendees had the opportunity to visit with 30 local vendors ranging from health resources to child care providers. The purpose of the evening was to provide women with the knowledge and resources they need to give their baby the best start in life .

Welcome Heather Hope-Hernandez

We are pleased to announce that Heather Hope-Hernandez has joined the executive leadership team as Chief of External Affairs.

Heather is a veteran communications and public policy professional with a nearly 25-year track record. A native Tulsan and University of Oklahoma graduate, Heather worked for 12 years in Washington, D.C., and New York City as a political journalist-first covering the U.S. Congress for publications including Congressional Quarterly where she analyzed the impact of proposed tax and budget legislation as well as appropriations, crime, immigration and campaign finance reform. She then covered national politics for a NYC-based cable news network. Upon returning to Tulsa in late 2003, Heather spent the next three years as a senior staff member on national, state and local political campaigns before turning full-time to marketing communications. She has been director of public relations for HKH Advertising since 2009.

Heather's enthusiasm, energy and passion for the work we do-and her commitment to the new strategic direction-has probably been clear to anyone who has gotten to know her. We're very excited to welcome her to the team.

Congratulations Cristina
