Red Cross, Fire Department, and SC Learning Council Partner to Install Free Smoke Alarms in Winfield

The Service Learning Council at Southwestern College is teaming with the American Red Cross and the Winfield Fire Department for "Sound the Alarm," the council's seventh annual Homecoming service project. The Service Learning Council is made up of Discipleship, Leadership, and Green Team directors and students.

The groups hope to install 700 smoke alarms in the Winfield community on Sunday, Oct. 22, between 1 and 5 p.m. The event will include the volunteers from the Red Cross (which serves south central and southeast Kansas), Southwestern, and the local fire department. In addition to installing the alarms, the volunteers will be canvassing neighborhood and helping families create fire escape plans. The event is part of the Red Cross's Fire Prevention Campaign.

Community residents can ensure they receive a free smoke alarm by calling 211, or online at www.getasmokealarm.org. In addition, forms have been handed out to students at every Winfield USD 465 school to inform parents of the event.
"The majority of students from our athletic teams, service learning teams, and student organizations have participated in the past and we expect that same level of participation this year," says Molly Just, director of Discipleship at Southwestern. "October is fire prevention month and our student body has set a goal of installing 700 fire alarms in the Winfield community. Many homes have outdated alarms and need new ones, along with a fire escape plan.

"Our students will be trained by the Red Cross to check and install alarms properly and talk with households about establishing a fire escape plan. If we reach our goal of 700 alarms installed, Winfield will hold the record in Kansas and Nebraska for the most fire alarms installed at one time in a community."

Jennifer Sanders, Red Cross executive director, is part of the planning group.
"Over the last 12 months, the Red Cross serving south central and southeast Kansas has responded to 295 home fires," Sanders points out. "In fact, home fires are the biggest disaster threat our community faces, killing seven people in this country every day. As of September 2017, the Red Cross and our partners across the country have saved at least 268 lives, reached 894,000 children through youth preparedness programs, and installed 964,000 free smoke alarms."

Joshua Dobbs, lieutenant and paramedic for the Winfield Fire Department, says emergency responders are looking forward to the event.

"Winfield Fire and EMS is excited to partner with Southwestern College and the American Red Cross to provide and install smoke alarms to the members of the Winfield community," Dobbs says. "The selection of this project by Southwestern College to serve as their annual service learning project shows that Southwestern College and the American Red Cross have a sincere interest in increasing the quality of life for Winfield Residents."

"This project would not be capable without the partnership of these great institutions and organizations," Dobbs says. "This project further increases the pride that I have to live and work in such a great community."

Winfield Chiropractic holding ribbon cutting for new name and logo

Winfield Chiropractic was founded in 1981 at 1301 South Main.  In 2005 the office moved to a larger location at 1913 E. 19th Ave.  At the same time a name change was introduced and Winfield Chiropractic & Rehab was born in order to accommodate it's more integrative care style.  In 2017 Dr.'s Doug and Brad Swanson update their brand and with it introduced a new modern logo and name.  Winfield Chiropractic Relief and Wellness, now proudly serves our surrounding communities.  "We believe that how long you decide to benefit from care is entirely up to you. Have you heard that once you go to a chiropractor, you have to go for the rest of your life? Well, it's not true. Whether you want relief, stabilization, prevention or wellness, we're here to help you reach your goal. Our job is to offer you the best chiropractic care possible, and your job is to decide how much of it you want."

A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held Wednesday, November 15th at 10:00 AM at 1913 E. 19th Ave.

IRS Changes 1023-EZ Form

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has implemented some changes to Form 1023-EZ, which is a streamlined application in order to be recognized as a 501(c)(3) exempt organization (EO). They believe that these changes will increase the processing times for the form. According to IRS Tax Exempt and Government Entities FY (fiscal year) 2018 Work Plan:

"Fiscal Year 2018 Rulings & Agreements EO expects to receive an increased number of determination applications in FY 2018. In early 2018, EO will implement revisions to the Form 1023-EZ, including a required activity description and additional questions on gross receipts, asset thresholds, and foundation classification. As a result of these changes, EO expects the average processing time for a Form 1023-EZ to increase. EO will continue pre-determination reviews of a statistical sample of Form 1023-EZ applications and will continue to analyze the data from these applications to mitigate risks and identify opportunities to improve this form and its instructions. EO will also implement enhancements to the Form 8976 submission platform to reduce the number of rejections due to non-payment of the required user fee."

Besides asking for your blessings and prayers, as usual we are needing help with traffic control, donations of foods for lunch and help with getting the message out that our county's needs are even greater this year.

The Angels in the Attic will be distributing the toys as needed around Cowley County.  Remember all gifts collected in Cowley stay in Cowley.  The surrounding counties have their own events which helps folks from those counties.

The event buttons will be arriving in a few days and will be a $2 donation.  We will be giving away two grand prizes this year.  To win one needs to get a $5 lunch arm band, enjoy a full meal lunch and keep the arm band on until the numbers are called.  Lunch will include home made Sloppy Joes, chips, veggie snacks and pie or cake, all to be washed down by iced tea or coffee.  Our prizes are first winner choice of a wooden rocking motorcycle or a heavy duty motorcycle lift to make repairs or cleaning a breeze.  The second draw will receive what the first winner does not choose.

There will be the usual contests and hundreds of prizes.  We will again have children's games designed by and ran by children.  Every child will be a winner and the tickers will only be 25 cents each.

I don't know about you but it all sounds like a lot of fun.  If you would like to sell buttons and/or deliver flyers, donate food, help with traffic or lineup of just what ever you can that would be great, just let me know so we don't duplicate resources.   Foods needed are carrots, celery, pies, cakes, individual packs of chips, or hamburger buns.  I would like to know as soon as possible about food donations so I know how to buy.  Everything that is donated will mean that much more money to get toys.

Thanks and God bless you all. Rose and toy run committee.
