One of our trainees is Raheem, 22, of Lawrence. Raheem is the father of Marcus, an adorable bundle of toddler joy. We asked Raheem why he signed up for ETTP:
"When I heard about ETTP, I was excited. I knew that the five weeks would be challenging, but I would walk away with the skills and certificates I need to better provide for Marcus."
Raheem is one of 25 graduates in 2016, joining an alumni network of over 175 trainees. ETTP alumni have become forest rangers, lead abatement workers, site superintendents, field technicians, and tree laborers for the current Green Streets initiative.
A major component of the ETTP is a well-rounded approach to workforce training, which includes soft skills development and resume writing.
"Groundwork Lawrence worked one-on-one with me to create a resume based on my previous experience and the training," Raheem explained. "After graduating, I was able to apply directly for a job with Philips Electronics North America, and now I work full-time. My family is so proud of me, and I feel like the father I need to be for Marcus."
Raheem took action to be a competitive prospective employee in today's workforce. And perhaps Marcus will follow in his father's footsteps in environmental training by joining Green Team in the future. We look forward to launching a Spanish component in Spring 2017.
