Bernie Brennan_ Jr.
Bernie Brennan, Jr., welcomes the third generation to the business in his son, James.

Brennan's Vending Service, a four-route operation based in Bogalusa, La. serving the greater Northshore area, has found technology an important investment in recent years.

The company, which began in 1950 as a Tom's Foods distributor, has changed with the times.
In recent years, the company has deployed cashless technology, vending management software, pre-kitting, guaranteed product delivery, pick-to-light warehouse management and most recently, micro markets.

The company continues to expand, demonstrating that small, independent operators can use state-of-the-art vending technology to remain competitive.

"If we don't do it, someone else will. You've got to keep up with the times," said James Brennan, a sales and service rep and a third generation employee of the company founded by his grandfather, Bernie Brennan, Sr.

The OptConnect managed wireless solution allows micro market kiosks to be deployed rapidly without requiring a connection to the location's existing network. The need to install a separate line can delay installations and add expense.

The Chine Brewer
The Chime brewer brews individual cups of authentic chai.
Camellia Labs, a "connected kitchen" startup, recently launched its first product, a single-cup chai brewer called Chime. Chime brews individual cups of authentic chai with a variety of black tea and spice blends sourced from India.

The brewer allows refreshment service operators to capitalize on one of the most popular hot beverages.

The user places a Chime cap (tea plus spice blend), adds a choice of milk or milk substitute, and presses "go." When the chai is ready, the user recycles the used Chime caps, throws the tea leaves in the compost bin and rinses their milk carafe.

The user can also adjust water-to-mil k ratio, cup size, brew strength and temperature directly from the device or from a connected phone app and store them as presets.
