This Sunday, November 6, 2016, at 9:30 a.m., we gather to celebrate our beloved community and to pledge our support to the church for the year to come.  The Eldridge String Quartet of symphony musicians, our own SHPC Singers, and our new Youth Ukelele Choir will serenade us and uplift us with gorgeous music.  Our Deacons are lovingly preparing the Harvest Feast.  Bring friends and neighbors!

A Note From
Pastor Bev

What a party we had
at the church on Halloween!  The rain poured down and over 100 costumed kids and many parents poured into the church for popcorn (50 bags! thank you Ahmed, Michael, and Lora ), hot cider (thank you Robin), candy (thank you Janel, Merry-Beth, and Sharon), and a place to rest and survey their loot.  The costumes were great this year (see photo gallery below).

At one point we had about 30 middle schoolers sitting on the patio just hanging out, while the rain came down in sheets.  Our church has a great opportunity to serve the youth right in our own backyard. We offer meaningful mission, music, kindness, non-judgmental acceptance, and joy.  Please join us in welcoming our new Youth Director, Sandra Ikeora, to the church this Sunday.  Bring your youngsters to meet her, and let's build our youth ministries.

Please note that I will be in Louisville, Kentucky, meeting with the Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy at PC(USA) denominational headquarters next week from Nov. 9-12.  Then I'm returning home via NYC to have a day with granddaughter Grace! Rev. Bentley Stewart will preach Nov. 13 and he will be covering pastoral care emergencies while I'm away.  You can reach him at 407-489-1258.

In peace,
Bev

Standing in Solidarity with Standing Rock
From the PC(USA)

From across the United States and the world, indigenous peoples and their allies have gathered at the Camp of the Sacred Stones, north of Cannon Ball, North Dakota, near the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe reservation's northern border. Members of the tribe took the initiative in this witness to protect their sacred sites and waters from environmental harm and to affirm tribal sovereignty and Treaty rights.

The people, known as water protectors, have come together in an effort to stop the Dallas-based company Energy Transfer from piping Bakken oilfield crude oil underneath the Missouri River, the main source of drinking water for the tribe. This project is known as the Dakota Access Oil Pipeline (DAPL).
The witness of the water protectors has touched the conscience of people and nations around the world to stand in solidarity with Standing Rock. Out of our faith, Presbyterians join them.
Recognizing the call of Jesus to stand with those who seek justice, Presbyterians have supported the water protectors in prayer. We have traveled to Standing Rock and have made financial contributions and provided supplies. We have signed petitions, made phone calls, and written letters to public officials and corporate leaders.
And we have grieved as the response by law enforcement has escalated. Dave Archambault II, Chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, has  written a letter to U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch in which he notes, "state and local law enforcement have increasingly taken steps to militarize their presence, intimidate participants who are lawfully expressing their views, and to escalate tensions and promote fear."
Wil LOVES an invite for lunch or dinner!

Thank you and bless you to all who have reached out to invite him over for a meal.  You are lighting up his life!

And thank him for his faithful and continuing FOOD BARREL MINISTRY.

"Be Nice ... Or Else"

I have to admit, I'm fascinated by Winn Claybaugh's book Be Nice (or Else) because it's an amazing take on the value of being nice.

Winn's "Be Nice" revolution is not about being a doormat, but forming a habit ... the "be nice" habit ... a habit that diffuses anger, inspires listening , and brings real communication and interaction to delicate situations.

Winn teaches ... add "nice" to whatever you're good at, and watch your relationships flourish, your career gain momentum, and your personal influence with others improve.

Being nice makes you more likable, looked up to, and sought after. The best news is you can focus on it today, right now. You can watch yourself say "no" to someone ... and be nice. In this new "conscious orbit" you can disagree with someone, challenge someone ... and still be nice.

Being nice makes us healthier, more positive and reduces stress levels.

When we read that the life of the spirit-led is characterized by "Love, joy, goodness, patience, gentleness, etc." in Galatians we can see that "being nice"  is an appropriate bow that can wrap around almost everything we do.

I'm going to start now. I'm going to consciously focus on being nice. I'm going to relax more. Look people in the eye, smile, and watch how we connect.

Isn't it cool that something so powerful... can start so quickly...  without fanfare and seminars? Wherever you are, with whomever you're with, consciously think of a way to be nice. Chuckle and kid a bit, then move things forward. There's a magical feeling that surrounds us when we feel liked, and wanted. While it's nice to be important, it's a lot more important to be nice.

Have a great week ... it sure is "nice" to be home ... Paul

Cook's Cozy Corner - Ketchup

There's been a flood of slightly overripe, "blemished" tomatoes left over from our farmstand table recently, as our tomato season winds down.  So, I made a double batch of ketchup.  This is in the Indonesian style, with a detour through Spain.  Some of the ingredients you won't find in the Heinz version.  I thought you might like to see the recipe for it.  It's a little bit of a project, as is most canning, but if you do it yourself you can juggle the ingredients to suit your own taste, and it can be fun to do as a family project.
Next week we will start talking green tomatoes.

Ketchup
2 qts. tomato pulp
2-3 big red bell peppers
hot chilis (like fresno, serrano, arbol) to taste
1/2 c. fish sauce
1 c. cider vinegar
1/2 c. almonds
6" ginger
8 garlic cloves
2 oz. tamarind paste
1 t. salt

The basic technique is to blend all of this into a very smooth puree using a powerful blender (I use a VitaMix).  Then add 1 1/2 c. sugar and cook it down on the stove top until it thickens to the degree you want.  Puree the solids first (almonds, garlic, ginger, tamarind) with enough liquid to make a smooth paste, then blend in the tomatoes and peppers.  It may take two or more batches.
It's difficult to specify the amount of hot chilis to add, since they vary a lot in heat.  Taste the result as you go along and stop when you get to about the heat you want.  In the recent batch, I used fresno chilis and a liberal amount of habenero hot sauce.
This will make about two quarts of ketchup.
--Michael Durphy
