Letter from the President
Summer is about over and the AGASC's annual group exhibition is coming up quickly. We hope most of you will want to show us what you have been busy creating this year by participating in the show. Everyone should know that it takes a lot of work to put this on, so we need everyone to volunteer to help out. The show's reception is on Sunday, Oct 1, 4-7pm, so please make sure to attend and check out all of your fellow artists' incredible work.
Our Board and Committee Chairpersons have been working behind the scenes to try and make the AGASC an organization of which we can be proud. We do need help in bringing all the events to you, so getting involved is encouraged.
The AGASC was going to have a CUD workshop this September. Unfortunately, circumstances beyond our control had us postpone the workshop until next year.
We also have AGASC Facebook and Instagram pages set up. So feel free to use it to post things about your art, art adventures, trips, etc. It is a great way to be connected to our glass community.
Live Glass and prosper,
Jack Wade,
President AGASC

It's Showtime!
Art Glass Association of Southern California
36th Annual Members' Exhibition
and Glass Boutique
We are looking forward to our 36th Annual Show in Spanish Village. There are a few changes from past years. We have lost Uroboros Glass as a sponsor to our show but still have CBS and Glassline offering certificates to their online stores. Also the AGA will be offering cash prices for the categories of Vessels, Sculpture, Wall Art, Wearable Art, Novice, Mixed Media and Best of Show.
We are happy to announce this year we are adding a Glass Boutique in the extra room in Gallery 21 which will be a separate application to the Annual Show. The purpose of this boutique is for AGASC artist to be able to sell additional items of their work during the show period as a pay and take item like the Art Glass Guild. We are asking for collections of 5 to 20 items that are smaller items that may be more affordable to the public. Work needs to be of good quality. We are expecting this to be a big money maker for all involved. Details will be posted on the AGASC site on the applications for the Boutique.
Applications are posted on the AGASC site (
http://www.agasc.org/annual-show.html) along with the Volunteers' List in the online application. Feel free to call me with questions or to let me know what you would like to volunteer for.
Mark your Calendar:
Entry Deadline: Monday, September 18th by Midnight.

AGASC Education Update
Kathleen Mitchell, Chairperson
Marti Blair, Co-Chair
Hello Members!
We recently put out a request for input from YOU about what kind of workshops and events you would most like to have available. We received only a few responses and would be open and willing to hear from the rest of you. In a nutshell, there was a general interest in shorter, less expensive, and more basic workshops. In addition, they would like to see them held on the weekends, when more of our members might be able to participate. Mind you, this is about 3% of our membership speaking up and we appreciate your input. We are working toward ways to see this happen, but would LOVE to see members step up to offer some skillset workshops themselves. While price is always a challenge, let's see what is out there. Let us know! More on this soon.
Kathleen and I have been focusing for many years on offering the membership higher levels of instructors, and more diverse techniques to broaden and expand members expressive capabilities. While it is true that these classes are more expensive and last sometimes 4 or 5 days in total, we are proud to be able to interact with the larger glass community on our home turf. Having access to qualified studio space for these workshops has been a challenge as well. Were it not for Susan Hirsch's willingness to host these workshops, we would not be having them.
Most recently, Kathleen has worked most of this year to coordinate and organize a multi dimensional experience for us all. She arranged the collaborative workshop of two highly regarded and veteran artists: John Drury of NYC, and Robbie Miller of Vancouver (Known at CUD) to engage our artistic narrative and open an explorative process in a 5 day workshop. This workshop has had to be postponed due to the recent and sudden eviction of all 29 artists at the hub art studios of Glashaus in the Barrio Logan, which as you know, includes our Kathleen Mitchell. While there was no glass blowing involved in the workshop (it does include mosaic and working with enamels), they have chosen to wait until Kathleen has reestablished her studio, wherever that may be. She is packed up and ready to move, but of course the time frame given was extremely short. In her usual quick minded way, she has arranged a temporary space to work as she continues to move forward. She will be producing work for 4 different exhibits over the next couple of months. May she be lifted up to meet the challenge!
Meanwhile we are working on tours for our members, most of which will be held in 2018 due to various factors. Suggestions have been repeat visits to CBS, to Pacific Glass, and to James Hubbell's wonderful enclave. We are including a notice of an event in Ojai, CA called Open Studios where you will find well known artists: Stephen Edwards, and Susan Stinsmuehlen-Amend on October 14,15, and 16. We will not organize a trip for this, but members are welcome to take this in at your own pace. Here is a link for more details:
Thank you for your participation in past events and workshops! We look forward to offering more inspirational and educational opportunities in the coming months with your input.

It is because Patrick Blythe was so kind, gentle, generous, knowledgeable and made meaningful art that he will be greatly missed. His many Docent tours at Palm Desert Museum with the Art Glass Association (AGASC) were always an inspiration to us. His long battle with cancer was a quiet one. He was well into it before we knew of his suffering. And he won a lot of battles along the way. You would not have known, as fellow Coachella Valley artist Paul Messink said: because "he was always amiable" even when you knew that chemo had "kicked his butt". He was always willing to have a conversation about your day, the arts, other artists, and the art glass community.
Our most recent opportunity was this past February at the Galen, Palm Springs Museum of Art in Palm Desert. Here he led 30 or so of us around the amazingly diverse Kaplan-Ostergaard Collection of Glass for the New Millennium. His personal relationships with several of the artists enriched our experience with fascinating details of their stories. He invited anyone who was interested to come out to his studio. It is with gratitude that I reflect on my personal visit to what is a wonderful space for drawing, sculpting, and working with glass, marble, and bronze. He was willing to share his personal journey in his work and he
made me feel completely welcome in his space. His studio is amazing! A dream space, arranged and set up so succinctly for personal work and teaching arts opportunities.
Patrick left the world the day after the Hundred Year Solar Eclipse swept across our nation. It almost seems as if he took his cue from that event in allowing his light to move behind the moon. Anyone who read his wife Barbara's lovely story of his final day sees the light that Patrick brought into her life. He mentioned how important and wonderful she was to me multiple times in my brief visit with him. Our condolences to Barbara as she struggles to move on without him.
But it is who he was all along the way that makes it difficult to say goodbye, even though any reflection of him finds him smiling and prevents me from going too deeply into the sadness of grief.
Thank you thank you thank you Patrick for your generous spirit. May that spirit hold your family and friends in grace as they move into the world without your physical presence.
