Marine Patrol with Yolo County Sheriff's Office
On a sultry Thursday morning in June, I stepped onto the Yolo County Sheriff's Department boat with KCRA reporter Dave Manoucheri and Sgt. Sam Machado to view abandoned vessels on our waterways. There is a recurring problem with boat owners dumping their vessels along the Sacramento River. This becomes a multifaceted problem that lands in the lap of those patrolling our waterways. NACo Annual Conference
Columbus, OH
The National Association of Counties Annual Conference, which was held from July 21-24, 2017 in Columbus, Ohio, is one of the largest annual conferences which draw county elected officials from across the country. I had the opportunity to attend with others from rural and urban counties and adopt our Annual Resolutions. We came together for four days of education, networking and sessions aimed to help improve our residents' lives and the efficiency of your county government.

Water is one of our most treasured and precious resources. The DCC, a coalition of five delta counties including Yolo, Sacramento, Contra Costa, San Joaquin and Solano, is hard at work to protect our water system from the devastating effects of the implementation of twin tunnels. I co-authored, along with Sacramento County Supervisor Don Nottoli, an op-ed entitled
The Twin Tunnels Water Project Jeopardizes the Affordability of Your Water Rates which was printed in the Orange County Register on July 28, 2017. For a link to the Orange County Register

In addition, on August 21, 2017 Yolo County, along with Contra Costa County, San Joaquin County, Solano County, Contra Costa County Water Agency, Central Delta Water Agency, and Local Agencies of the North Delta and South Delta Water Agency, filed a lawsuit in the Sacramento County Superior Court challenging the Department of Water Resources' certification of the Environmental Impact Report (EiR) for the Water Fix project "Twin Tunnels". Yolo Basin Foundations' Bat Walk and Talk Tour
Unbeknownst to most Yolo County residents, colonies of migratory bats live under the Yolo Causeway during the summer. On July 12th from 6:30 pm until dusk I joined the Yolo Basin Foundation's Bat Talk and Walk event to learn about these amazing and beneficial mammals. This family friendly event was well-attended with much enthusiasm and wonder as the Mexican free-tailed bats flew out for their evening forage. To view photos of the evening

West Sacramento Day Reporting Center and Urban Farm
Community Service
The West Sacramento Day Reporting Center helps previously incarcerated adults matriculate back into society. On July 5, 2017, The Center for Land Based Learning's Lake Washington Urban Farm received help clearing debris and performing light landscaping in preparation for upcoming planting, by clients of the West Sacramento DRC. Approximately 100 DRC clients worked close to 1000 hours. This stint at the Lake Washington Farm was invaluable for the DRC clients who were able to contribute and give back to their local community.

During the past few months, the following projects were completed:
1. Netherlands Road had severe overgrowth of trees which created hazardous road conditions for emergency vehicles and such. Through a contract with the California Conservation Corp and the Yolo County Public Works staff, many of the trees have been cut back. To view before and after photos click here.
2. Share the Road signs were placed along Clarksburg Road to remind drivers and cyclists alike to drive cautiously when near one another. Click here for photo.
3. Traffic Metering Study conducted on South River Road. There have been many concerns expressed regarding the excessive speeding by vehicles on South River Road. In addition, during commute hours, there is a back-up of traffic coming to/from the Freeport Bridge. In an effort to quantify the actual number of vehicles driving on South River Road, including speed, metering was done in both directions. This information will be shared with the Clarksburg Fire Protection District and the Clarksburg General Plan Citizen's Advisory Board at their respective September meetings. Based upon the data, discussion will focus on viable options to address traffic concerns. |
