Welcome to our Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC) quarterly newsletter. The goal in producing this newsletter is to keep our members informed and involved. We are highlighting opportunities for collaborations, new funding opportunities, new grants and promotions, new personnel, and upcoming seminars and events. We always welcome your suggestions and contributions for future issues.  Wishing you all a happy and productive year!
Spotlight On
OASIS women in leadership program
The Objective Analysis of Self and Institution Seminar, known as OASIS, is a leadership and professional development program designed to accelerate the career development and advancement of academic women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics through a combination of workshops, networking, mentoring and individual coaching. The program aims to increase retention of women in these fields by preparing women for leadership positions. We would like to congratulate Katie Devine, PhD, MPH,  Assistant Professor of Medicine; who was chosen to participate in the program.

In the Know
Elliot Coups, PhD, Associate Professor of Medicine was notified by NJ Health Commissioner Bennett's office that his article “ Indoor tanning among New Jersey high school students before and after the enactment of youth access restrictions ,” published recently in Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology , was forwarded to the state’s Public Health and Food Protection Program to inform indoor tanning regulations.

Dr. Coups was interviewed on the Dr. Arthur Perry Show WABC 770 AM that aired on June 4, 2016 to discuss the findings of this study and NJTV News on August 2, 2016 with Jerod Stapleton, PhD, Assistant Professor of Medicine.

Monday, November 14, 2016, Ashley Day, PhD, Postdoctoral Appointee, Population Science, presented Health beliefs and behaviors among individuals diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma ".
Awards and Honors
Elisa Bandera, MD, PhD, P rofessor of Epidemiology, and Co-Leader, Cancer Prevention and Control Program, Rutgers, Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Population Science was appointed as a standing member of the National Institute of Health (NIH) Cancer, Heart, and Sleep Epidemiology Panel B Study (CHSB) (2016-2020) Learn more about Dr. Bandera.


The New Jersey State Cancer Registry  (NJSCR) was awarded the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) Gold Certification at the Annual NAACCR conference June, 2016 in St. Louis, Missouri.  Nan Stroup, PhD, Director and Stephanie Hill, MPH, CTR, Program Manager, accepted the award on behalf of NJSCR.
Aishwarya Kulkarni, MPH, won first place for her student presentation at the June 2016 NAACCR conference on “Incidence of Triple Negative Breast Cancer in New Jersey, 2008-2013.”  This study was led by Adana Llanos, PhD, MPH in collaboration with Nan Stroup, PhD (Ms. Kulkarni’s faculty advisor) and staff at the NJSCR.

Adana Llanos, PhD, MPH,  received the Buckeye Under 40 Award. This award recognizes young Ohio State University (OSU) alumni who have made significant contributions in their respective fields. The award is given by the Black Alumni Society at OSU with the intent of highlighting young talent doing remarkable things. 
Grants

Congratulations to the following faculty members on their grants:

Shawna Hudson, PhD,  Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health, two-year, research supplement to promote diversity in health-related research program to advance her work on "Extended Cancer Education for Longer-term Survivors (EXCELS) In Primary Care," supported by her ongoing NIH RO1 grant.

Elisa Bandera, MD, PhD, P rofessor of Epidemiology, and Kitaw Demissie, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair of Epidemiology, one-year, administrative  supplement to advance their work on the Women’s Circle of Health Study supported by Dr. Bandera's ongoing NIH R01 grant. Plus a  two-year, minority  supplement to promote diversity in health-related research program for Michelle Doose, a doctoral student at Rutgers School of Public Health to gain  training and expertise in cancer health disparities research by being involved in the Women’s Circle of Health Follow-Up Study among African American breast cancer survivors also  supported by her ongoing NIH R01 grant.

Stacy Davis, PhD, MPH, Instructor of Health Education and Behavioral Sciences, two-year grant by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) entitled "Wired for Colorectal Cancer Screening: An MHealth intervention", R03CA198580.

Upcoming Events
Rutgers Cancer Institute - Cancer Prevention and Clinical Investigations Joint Retreat
On November 17, 2016,  the CPC and CIPT Programs will be hosting a collaborative r etreat. The goal of this retreat is to enhance inter-programmatic collaborations. The keynote speaker for the forum will be Mathew J. Ellis, MB, BChir, BSc., PhD, FRCP ,  Director of the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center at the Baylor College of Medicine who will speak about transnational research- the intersection of clinical oncology and cancer control. 

Other speakers such as Nan Stroup, PhD, Associate Professor, School of Public Health and Director, NJ State Cancer Registry  will discuss "SEER Cancer Registry" and Shridar Ganesan, MD, PhD Associate Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology,  will speak about " Aiming targeted therapy and immunotherapy: updates from PMI’

CPC Journal Club

Please join us at the next Journal Club meeting on Tuesday, December 6th at 4 pmRutgers Cancer Institute, conference room 3006.               Kevin Criswell, PhD, Postdoctoral Appointee, Population Science will be leading the meeting. 

In 2017, the Journal Club will be meeting the second Tuesday of every other month at 4pm in conference room 5546 at Rutgers Cancer Institute starting this coming January. Mark your calendars!
