Healing with Hippos?
by Sheri A. Marino, MA, CCC-SLP

Hippotherapy is a comprehensive treatment strategy using equine movement offered by specially trained speech, physical and occupational therapists. People often ask, "Why is it referred to as "Hippotherapy?" The root word "Hippo" is Greek for horse and it is believed that treatment with the help of a horse began back in ancient Greece! Contrary to therapeutic riding, Hippotherapy does not teach riding skills. Rather, therapists trained in biomechanics use specific movement of highly trained therapy horses to facilitate functional outcomes. This three dimensional movement of the horse, along with movement patterns and position changes directed by the therapist, facilitates motor, sensory, speech/language and cognitive skills, and helps boost social-emotional development..

Hippotherapy can be used with individuals as young as 2 years of age. Although there are some precautions and contraindications for certain diagnoses, an evaluation by our therapists determines eligibility. Initially, children may be intimidated or fearful of the horse and sometimes, the sensory overload from the sights, sounds and smells can be overwhelming! Naturally, our therapists help the children work through these feelings as part of the therapeutic process. It doesn't take long for the smiles and even laughter to begin! This motivation becomes a key component to the success of the therapy.

Hippotherapy is an effective way to treat the "whole child" and achieve improvements in balance, adaptive responses, muscle tone, sensory integration, and functional speech and language skills, while fostering a special bond with our equine friends!

Horse of the Month
Tetley

Tetley is the newest addition to our equine staff. He is  a Pony of the Americas,  8 years old and is 13 hands high. Tetley loves to be cuddled and given lots of attention after riding!  He is patient and kind with all of our riders and is particularly skilled at unzipping zippers with his teeth!

Tetley has been a part of Rocking Horse Rehab since October, 2015. During the summer, Tetley works at a camp in upstate New York.

Tetley loves attention and would appreciate you visiting him in his stall next to Small Fry!

Hero of the Month
The Kids Wish Network

The Kid's Wish Network has chosen Alex as Rocking Horse Rehab Hero of the Month! Alex has been involved with RHR since January 2014. She has patiently worked to establish a trusting relationship with the horses where she is perceived as a confident leader. This work has enabled her to establish new ways to manage her anxiety and depression.

Alex has completed her high school education and is now attending the University of Minnesota. We are so very proud of her and wish her much success in her college pursuits!

Volunteer of the Month
Alexa Pizzuta

Alexa has been a volunteer with Rocking Horse Rehab since September of 2015.  Alexa is here almost every day and loves working with our clients and horses.  As a volunteer, Alexa sidewalks for our clients and leads horses for sessions.  She enjoys grooming and working with the horses in between sessions.

As a student of family studies at Montclair State University, Alexa  will begin her internship this semester assisting Kathy Lutz with our mental health programs.

We are very happy to have Alexa as a part of our team!

Our volunteers are an essential part of the RHR team and we could not offer our services without their dedication and support! Volunteers help spot the children as side-walkers and also help to prepare our equine partners for therapy sessions. Earn hours for community service, religion classes, high school requirements or college applications by volunteering at RHR! This rewarding and fulfilling experience will be sure to make your day brighter!
