The ESSA Opportunity
New Video Series Offers Teachers Advice on Engaging with States

NNSTOY has released a new series of short videos that offers educators advice about how to reach out to state and local policymakers. 

"The success of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) depends on deep educator engagement," said NNSTOY President and CEO  Katherine Bassett (New Jersey 2000). "These videos, r ecorded by State Teachers of the Year and Finalists, contain great strategies for teacher leaders to get into the game."

Black Teachers Matter                                
Joshua Parker (Maryland 2012) will lead the Fellowship for outstanding Black male educators.
New NNSTOY Fellowship for Outstanding Black Male Educators

This week NNSTOY will begin a year-long virtual fellowship for a group of outstanding Black male educators. Working with State Teachers of the Year and Finalists, the selected teachers will strengthen their practice and build support systems and leadership skills to equip them to become educational leaders. 

Approximately 25 participants will attend a rich array of monthly webinars, meeting with nationally recognized experts to discuss a range of topics, and continue their conversations through an online portal (courtesy of a generous donation by the National Association of Educators). Monthly discussion topics include:

November
Perception versus Reality:  Managing your brand as a Black Male Educator in the historically non-diverse United States school system.
December
Overcoming Stereotypes:  Managing common stereotypes that attach themselves to Black Male educators in various levels of the school system. 
January 
Professional Excellence:  What are the hallmarks of professionalism in practice and behavior within a schoolhouse, school system and larger community?
February
Honing Your Craft:  Ways to deepen your content and pedagogical knowledge throughout your professional career.
March Honing Your Craft: Ways to deepen your content and pedagogical knowledge throughout your professional career
April
Lessons from the Bottom:  What happens when your career takes a wrong turn or careens out of control? How can you get back on track?
May Raising Great Students: What are our responsibilities as educators in attending to the social-emotional and psychological realities of the students we teach? 
June
My Brother's Keeper:  What are our responsibilities as educators to mentoring younger Black male teachers (pre-service or early years)? How can we bring along more Black Male Educators into the pipeline, so that our schools see more representation?
