On November 15, The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC) will open its new exhibition on renowned Louisiana photographer Clarence John Laughlin (1905-1985), who created some of the most unusual and well-known images of our time. Perhaps the most significant artist in New Orleans history, Laughlin was a pioneer of surrealist and experimental photography, gaining an international reputation and following during his lifetime.
Using over 50 years of photographs and correspondence culled together by three curators, Clarence John Laughlin and His Contemporaries: A Picture and a Thousand Words depicts the visual and written exchanges between an artist and his peers. The wealth of material allows guests to form their own opinions of the fiery Laughlin, and look at his work on their own terms.
The exhibition will run until Saturday, March 25, 2017, at THNOC's Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres Street. Normal gallery hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, excluding holidays. Admission is free.

National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day - November 15
NATIONAL CLEAN OUT YOUR REFRIGERATOR DAY
National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day is observed annually on November 15. Get together a soap and hot water filled bucket, disinfectant, a sponge and a garbage bag, and you are ready for the day!
The timing is perfect for this day as Thanksgiving is coming soon. We will need room for all of the upcoming leftovers. This job may be dreaded by many, but it is an important task none the less. Due to our hectic and busy lifestyles, the cleaning of the refrigerator gets neglected, hence the creation of National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day. There may be a surprise or two found at the back of the shelves. Things are often pushed back as new food is put in the front and gets forgotten.
National Bundt Day November 15
NATIONAL BUNDT DAY
National Bundt Day, also known as National Bundt Cake Day is observed every year on November 15. As people across the United States are planning their menu for the upcoming holidays, a bundt cake is sure to be on the list at least once.
A bundt cake can be any cake baked in a Bundt pan, forming it into a distinctive ring shape. The mold of the Bundt pan was originally inspired by the traditional European fruit cake known as Gugelhupf. It was in the 1950s and 1960s that cookware Nordic Ware popularized the style for the mold design and trademarked the name Bundt. Nordic Ware started producing Bundt pans made from cast aluminum. Similar pans are sold as "fluted tube pans" or other similar names.
NATIONAL SPICY HERMIT COOKIE DAY
National Spicy Hermit Cookie Day is observed annually on November 15.
Today honors an old-fashioned cookie spiced with cinnamon, cloves, allspice and sometimes nutmeg and filled with raisins, nuts and dates.
Hermit cookies originated in the New England area. In 1880 the young ladies of the Trinity Church, Plattsburgh, New York published the cookbook Champlain Valley Book of Recipes with a Hermits recipe. This was a local cookbook in its 3rd edition suggesting it was first printed a year or two earlier. Soft and chewy, these cookies are sure to put a smile on the face of all who taste them.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Enjoy this Hermit Cookies recipe. Use #SpicyHermitCookieDay to post on social media.
National Philanthropy Day - November 15
NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY DAY
National Philanthropy Day is observed annually on November 15.
Philanthropists are honored for their many significant contributions, help and good deeds and for the differences that they have made in our lives and our communities.
The word philanthropy comes from Latin and Greek philanthropia which gives us kindliness, humanity and love to mankind. From this, we take the philo (tending to, fond of) and join antropos meaning mankind or human beings.
There are instances of philanthropy that can overlap with instances of charity. The difference is that charity relieves the pains of social problems, whereas philanthropy attempts to solve those problems at their root causes.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Use #NationalPhilanthropyDay to post on social media.
HISTORY
National Philanthropy Day was created by the Association of Fundraising Professionals in 1985.
National Raisin Bran Cereal Day - November 15
NATIONAL RAISIN BRAN CEREAL DAY

Since 1926, raisin bran cereal has been manufactured by a number of different companies under a variety of brand names, including Kellogg's Raisin Bran, General Mills, Total Raisin Bran and Ralcorp's Post Raisin Bran. U.S. Mills introduced Skinner's Raisin Bran to the United States in 1926, which was the first brand on the market.
A good source of dietary fiber, raisin bran cereal is the star of the day, not just at breakfast but all day, on National Raisin Bran Cereal Day.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Enjoy a big bowl of raisin bran cereal and use #RaisinBranCerealDay to post on social media.

Now, we don't like bragging, but we have to say that the 504ward Restaurant Night is one of the best things we've ever come up with. It's a night where we invite a group of young professionals in the city (that's y'all) to a prix-fixe meal at one of New Orleans' best restaurants. We also invite established city leaders there to meet all of y'all in an informal setting. At just $30 for a hefty meal, you get a big discount at some of the best restaurants in the city, and a chance to meet awesome people and connect. It's brilliant, if we do say so ourselves.
For this 504ward Restaurant Night, we're heading to Cavan, the funky spot brought to you by the people who own Sylvain, Meauxbar and Barrel Proof. Their menu for the night is unreal -- 3 different passed appetizers of hushpuppies with spiced honey, Gulf oyster shooters with cocktail sauce and mignonette and then fried oyster mushrooms with malt aioli. Displayed on a table for the main course will be smoked salmon with cucumbers, herbed yogurt, and brioche, Caesar salad, roasted tomato toast with goat cheese and bacon marmalade, and chilled white bean toast with grilled kale and walnut pesto.
It's happening Tuesday, November 15th starting at 6 p.m., and the price as always is $30, inclusive of tax and gratuity. If you'd like to come, just sign up here and we'll let you know shortly if you've made it. Space is limited, and we'll give preference to folks who haven't gone before, but if you want to try Cavan, sign up here by this Thursday at noon! This is going to be super fun and super delicious.
Everything changes the sweltering summer of 2007 for fifteen-year-old Elizabeth Yale. When Elizabeth's father, Jesse, dies suddenly. Her grandfather, Jack Yale disappears in the middle of the night, unable to deal with the death of his son. During his travels, Jack spies an antique typewriter that he swears calls his granddaughter's names. Despite Jack's desperate attempt to purchase the machine, the merchant refuses, claiming he has been tasked with finding the machines' rightful owner. After several dreams and bizarre mishaps, Jack returns to the merchant armed with the information he is seeking. The adventure that ensures will have readers on a wild chase for the truth from the United States to the Netherlands.
After years of running from his tragic past, Jack Yale books a flight home. With him is a typewriter that is intended to be a gift for his granddaughter, Elizabeth. The minute Elizabeth's fingers cradle the large black and cream keys the machine responses: popping, sizzling, and roaring to life with a Whiz-Whiz-BANG! Elizabeth quickly discovers the typewriter has powers beyond anything she has ever seen. The more she types, the more the machine spells out guarded secrets that need to be revealed in order to set history straight and remove a curse that has been on their family for centuries. To solve the mystery, Elizabeth Yale, alongside Jack, will have to crack the code of the Whizbang Machine. What they find challenges their most basic assumptions of their family, the history of the typewriter, and even Elizabeth's father's death. The ultimate goal is to remove the curse.
This book is available in paperback ($14.95).
Danielle A. Vann discusses and signs her book The Whizbang Machine.

Nicholas Mainieri - THE INFINITE
Please join us for a special evening with New Orleans author Nicholas Mainieri celebrating the launch of his debut novel,
THE INFINITE on the day of its release.
THE INFINITE is that rare, beautiful first novel, so contemporary and yet as timeless as first love itself. And Nick Mainieri does what great novelists do with their first great works. He creates unforgettable characters in young lovers Jonah and Luz who, both together and alone, navigate the rushing river of the borderlands that mark our two Americas. THE INFINITE is a heart song, and Nicholas Mainieri is one of our next great storytellers." -Joseph Boyden, author of The Orenda and Three Day Road
In this suspenseful, tender, and completely absorbing novel set in a perilous post-Katrina New Orleans and cartel-plagued Mexico, two teenagers discover a temporary haven in each other.
Jonah McBee has deep roots in New Orleans, but with hardly any family left, he half-heartedly is planning to enlist in the army after high school. Luz Hidalgo, an undocumented Latina and budding track star, followed her father there after Hurricane Katrina. Both have known loss. Both are struggling to imagine a new future. And when Jonah and Luz fall in love, it is intense, addictive, and real.
But everything changes when Luz discovers that she's pregnant. In a moment of panic, her father sends Luz back to Mexico so her grandmother can help raise the baby. Devastated, Jonah decides to take a road trip with his best friend when he doesn't hear from her.
Little does Jonah know, Luz is fighting for her life. Her trip has been cut short by a shocking act of violence, thrusting her into the endless cycle of bloodshed perpetrated by the cartels. So Luz does what she does best: She runs. And she goes farther and deeper than she ever imagined.
A breathtaking portrait of post-Katrina New Orleans and a riveting descent into Mexico's drug war, THE INFINITE is an utterly unique debut novel about the borders that divide us and the truths that unite us.
Nicholas Mainieri's short fiction has appeared in the Southern Review, the Southern Humanities Review, andSalamander, among other literary magazines. He holds an MFA from the University of New Orleans and currently teaches writing and literature at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana. He lives in New Orleans with his wife and son. THE INFINITE is his first novel.

A playful new adaptation of Jane Austen's beloved novel follows the fortunes (and misfortunes) of the Dashwood sisters - sensible Elinor and hypersensitive Marianne - after their father's sudden death leaves them financially destitute and socially vulnerable. Set in gossipy late 18th-century England, with a fresh female voice, the play is full of humor, emotional depth, and bold theatricality. SENSE AND SENSIBILITY examines our reactions, both reasonable and rediculous, to societal pressures. When reputation is everything, how do you follow your heart?

While working as a performance company, students will learn the fundamentals of collaborative theater-making and artistic training.
This workshop engages the students in a detailed approach of Theater Mitu's training methodology of Whole Theater. Whole Theater is defined as a theatrical experience that is rigorously visual, aural, emotional, intellectual and spiritual-both in creation and in performance.
More about Whole Theater: This demanding physical training has been developed by extrapolating and synthesizing various trainings from a range of selected world theater traditions. These include but are not limited to: Japanese Noh, Kabuki, Bunraku and Butoh training; Thai Kohn, Drumming and Muay Thai training; Indian Kathakali, Kalaripayattu, and Mohiniattam training; Ethiopian Zayen training; Iranian Ta'zieh training; Peking Opera training; and Islamic/Sufi Whirling training. These root traditions and their training applications will be explored physically as a group. At the root of these investigations is the artist's discipline. The class will investigate and identify lines of artistic and collaborative discipline in order to garner successful models of artistic process, exploration, and creation habits.

Espionage Symposium and The 2016 International Conference on World War II
1946: Year Zero Triumph and Tragedy
November 17-19 New Orleans, Louisiana
As a young man, John Singlaub was selected for a highly secretive, behind-the-lines mission to serve as a Jedburgh. Made up of two to four men, the Jedburghs usually consisted of one British, one French, and one American serviceman. They dropped behind enemy lines into occupied France and, once on the ground, connected with local French Resistance forces to fight Nazis however they could. Few of these Jedburghs are alive today.
Singlaub served his country proudly for three more decades, from finishing the war in the elite OSS unit, to becoming one of the founding agents of the CIA, to retiring as a Major General. Singlaub consulted in high-level situation rooms and even in the Oval Office. He continues to consult today with high-ranking government and military officials, as well as the soldiers and agents who follow in his footsteps.
The National WWII Museum is honored to be hosting General Singlaub as the concluding speaker at its Espionage Symposium, available as an exclusive add-on to the 2016 International Conference on WWII. General Singlaub will be part of a wonderful program that includes Sir Max Hastings and Alex Kershaw, in the kickoff to our International Conference, which will focus on how the United States, and the world, changed as a result of the war.

Golden Guys & Gals: November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month
Louisiana SPCA highlights the advantages of adopting a Senior Pet
NEW ORLEANS, LA-There's no such thing as old when a dog's heart is full of gold. The Louisiana SPCA is celebrating November as Adopt-A-Senior-Pet-Month. During November, all of our dogs and cats 6 years and older are available for adoption for $11. It's a great time to give a senior pet a forever home.
"Many adopters tend to seek out puppies and kittens but a senior pet can be just the companion you're looking for. When we look at what group of animals spend the most time waiting to be adopted, senior pets are usually at the top of the list," says Louisiana SPCA Placement Supervisor Jordan Buccola. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? Senior pets may be perfect for you. Here's several reasons why:
Older pets may be perfect for you if you're looking for a companion that's already potty-trained or doesn't need the constant supervision that a puppy or kitten does.
Senior pets are perfect for senior citizens or anyone who lives in a calm, easy-going lifestyle.
Senior dogs are easier to train than puppies. Their calm demeanor helps them be more attentive to learning.
They're grateful for your kindness. Older animals somehow know you gave them a home when no one else would, especially when many end up on the euthanasia list.
The best thing about adopting a senior pet is knowing that you will always be a hero in their eyes!
