From the director...
Sometimes, we are so busy around this time of year that we forget that others may be going through rough times. While the holidays can be a joyous time for gathering family and friends, it can also be a somber time for those who have lost loved ones and face another holiday season without them. For those who can afford to host parties or buy lots of gifts, it is often forgotten that many among us may not be so fortunate, and the financial strain rests heavily upon their shoulders. Added to this, our nation just went through a contentious election season that left many rifts between friends, family and co-workers in communities across the country.
Its times like these that I find comfort in the values and openness of libraries and what we provide to the community by our presence, our welcoming atmosphere and our reputation as a safe place to gather. Many of us were drawn to this profession because we are curious, we love information, and we enjoy helping others. We also like to build and strengthen community. Sometimes, what we like to offer is the best thing to offer - hope, help, and to do something to benefit others. For the past few weeks we have been gathering new, unwrapped toys for the Newburgh Ministries and the box continually overflows with your generosity. The Backpack for Food bins in our lobby fill up with nutritious food for kids. Our annual Food for Fines exchange of a dollar in fines for a can or box of food continues to yield a stockpile of goods for the Hudson Valley Food Bank.
Sometimes, when the world gets overwhelming, all we have to do is look around us and help someone else out to remember we are all connected. We need each other. Be nice. Happy Holidays to you and your family.
With gratitude,
Mary Lou Carolan
