Last month, IMLS staff participated in pre-conference grantee convening and other activities related to the 2016 International Conference of Indigenous Archives, Libraries, and Museums organized by the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums (ATALM). Office of Museum Services staff reflect and share their learning and networking experiences in two blogs.

    I was happy to represent the Office of Museum Services as a co-presenter for two sessions. This was my first time attending, and it was a valuable opportunity to meet past and present Native American/Native Hawaiian Museum Services (NANH) awardees, many of whom presented on their projects.   • Coming Together, Learning Together: Building a Community of Practice
    Meeting with grantees to learn about the amazing work they do within their museums and cultural centers is one of my most rewarding opportunities as a Senior Program Officer. Given the great distance between many recipients and our Washington, D.C. office, face-to-face meetings are a rarity, so I consider myself honored (and lucky!) to coordinate and host a yearly gathering of current Native American/Native Hawaiian Museum Services (NANH) grant program recipients. Playing the Long Game: Improving Storage & Access One Piece at a Time
When I arrived at my museum a little less than five years ago, I inherited a permanent collection of 3,500 objects that were divided between two storage areas across our university. The fragmented storage situation made inventory, care, and access almost impossible for our small staff of two full-time employees. Read more

Community Salute Blog Series
In September, IMLS announced a cooperative agreement with FSG to strengthen the ability of libraries and museums to fulfill the unique and critical needs of veterans and military families. Through the Community Salute program, IMLS is gathering information from a variety of key stakeholders in the library, museum, and military communities; identifying opportunities for enhancing community services; and developing resources to strengthen the role libraries and museums have in addressing the specific needs of veterans and military families.

  • Libraries and Their Partners Are a Pathway to Benefits for California VeteransIn California, where the number of veterans is the highest in the nation, libraries are connecting with former service members and veteran family members, becoming a pathway to their enrollment in eligible services.   • Community Salute: Bridging the Civilian/Veteran Divide through Film
    Launched with the help of an IMLS grant, the Veterans Make Movies initiative teaches veterans how to tell their stories in film.
