Mission Bowl II

Tonight the Garces Rams football teams plays BCHS in the second annual Mission Bowl sponsored by Mission Bank.  Please come out to watch an exciting game between the only private high schools in Bakersfield and show your support for our Rams. Last year, Garces took home the Mission Bowl Trophy with a final score of 44-21.  This year, the Rams are looking to repeat.  BVaristy currently has Garces ranked 15th in the Central Section and BCHS ranked #6. It should be a great match up.  The Herd has called for a "White Out" - so if you come - wear white and show your support for one of the best student cheering sections in town. Go Rams!

JV Volleyball

Congratulations to our JV Volleyball team on winning the consolation bracket at the West High JV Tournament last weekend.  Members of the team are:  Alonda Garay,  Jazminne Mayen, Ali Adkins, Luisa Dulcich, Jana Dulcich, Emelie Harper, Allyse Naworski, Alex Penner, Liz Sands, Isabelle Tanuwijaya, Caroline Napier, and Clarisse Tracy.

They are coached by Garces alumnae Molly Tobias '12 and Kiki Sandrini '12.
Congratulations Claire Cornejo

Lady Ram Golfer Claire Cornejo had a great outing at the Liberty High School Tournament.  Claire played in a very competitive field that included defending state champions.  Claire placed at the tournament earning another medal to add to her collection.  Nice job Claire!
Varsity Jersey Night

Coach AJ Gass takes naming the varsity squad seriously.  It is an honor to wear a Garces Ram jersey as a varsity player and to represent our school on the playing field under the Friday night lights.  The boys work hard in the off season and during the pre-season - in the weight room, in the classroom, and on the practice field.  They have to be season-ready and grade ready.  Coach Gass personally hands each player his varsity jersey and on "Jersey Night" he says a few words about each player.  Coach Gass invites all the parents to attend and it is his opportunity to thank them as well as to tell them a little bit about their son as a player on the Garces Ram's varsity squad.  Thank you Coach Gass for making a special night for our Ram family.  Good luck this season!

SAM THE RAM

Sam the Ram was a fixture on the Garces sidelines during the school's earliest years.  The youngest members of the Garces Herd, the junior high boys, were charged with keeping him under control during the games, with varying degrees of success.

When Sam passed away suddenly in the early 1950s, the student body held a wake on campus before welcoming his nephew who, according to the school newspaper, the Garcian, "volunteered" to continue his uncle's tradition at Garces.

Over the decades since, Sam has made periodic appearances at Tobias Field.  Look for his return later this season.

RAM FACT:
At one time, Garces' junior varsity teams were known as the Ramblers.  The freshmen teams were called the Kids.  When girls' teams were added in the late 1970s they were originally the Ramettes.

Mock Trial Tryouts
August 30th at 6 PM

Dan Raytis, Nicole Bianco, Scott Belden, HA Sala, and Antonio Lopez-Hutchison.
On Wednesday, August 30th, students can try out for the Mock Trial team in Ms. Bianco's Classroom. Room 41.  It's super easy to do.  All they need to do is see Ms. Bianco and get a copy of the material.  The try outs are to help determine who are the best candidates for being a prosecutor, a defense attorney, or a witness. Mock Trial is a wonderful opportunity for students to improve public speaking skills, communication skills, and boost their self confidence.  If your student is an athlete, the advisers will work around their schedule.   This year's advisers are Dan Raytis, Katy Raytis, Scott Belden, HA Sala, and Antonio Lopez-Hutchison.

Academic Affairs

Garces Parents,

The 2017-18 school year is in full swing! It was exciting and exhausting for me to watch parents and students navigate their way through the first week of school. I was reminded of how much time, effort and community support goes into making Garces a great school.  Thank you and welcome back!

We have worked diligently to ensure that all students have complete schedules and access to course textbooks. While most students have already obtained their required texts, we understand that the online ordering process can be challenging. If your student is having difficulty acquiring his/her books and needs assistance, please contact Mr. LaCava or Mrs. Sakowski. Follett's customer service department should be contacted to return textbooks and request refunds.

NetClassroom, Garces' online portal for students and parents to access academic information, allows parents to evaluate their student's academic performance between report cards. Freshmen and transfer parents will receive their NetClassroom login information at Back to School Night on August 28, 2017. We encourage freshman parents to view their student's grade book at least once a week to evaluate their progress in each class. Our freshman counselor, Mrs. Poochigian has provided NetClassrom training for all members of the freshman class, so students should be able to access and view their academic information online. The first progress report will be posted on NetClassroom on September 15, 2017. Although these grades will not affect eligibility for athletics and extracurricular activities, they will serve as a strong indicator of your student's academic progress.

I would be remiss to address academic progress without mentioning student's attendance.  Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between attendance and academic success.  Please review the  "Excessive Absence Policy" in the student handbook located on the parent page of our website, page 51 and contact Mrs. Sakowski or Coach Gass if you have questions.

Finally, I would like to address an important point regarding education technology, which has changed the way we work, address each other and relate to one another.  For many of us, our parents knew how we felt as we transitioned from year to year, because they were able to read our emotions and at times intercept notes or eaves drop on a phone conversation. Between Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, and other social media applications, parents and the school community are struggling to keep up with what and how students are using their technology.  Please continue to be mindful of what your students' access on their phones and their social interactions.  Encourage them to strive to fulfill the mission of Garces Memorial High School, to have the courage to act with Faith, Knowledge, Compassion and Justice.  We can do this!

Please do not hesitate to contact me @ 321-2578 ext.110 if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Debra Sakowski
