Grant Money Available!

RHR is a recipient of a generous grant from the Italian Welfare League, an organization which assists children of Italian descent who are ill or have suffered an emotional trauma. Since 2001, they have raised and distributed over $1,600,000 to hundreds of children and organizations which provide services to children.  Their grant helps us to provide services for children of Italian descent who otherwise would not be able to afford our services.

Their recipients have many different diagnoses, such as brain injuries, autism, cerebral palsy, and Down syndrome.  For more information on how to receive a grant for our services, please email us at:  carey@rockinghorserehab.com
Message of the Month:
Therapeutic Riding vs. Hippotherapy

by Carey Masson

Many people assume that therapeutic riding and hippotherapy are the same thing.  While they share many qualities and are similar, there are also some key differences that separate them.  Both share the use of horses, and also the use of a horse leader and sidewalkers for the safety and to assist the rider.

Hippotherapy is a tool that is used in coordination with the therapy being given; occupational, physical, or speech therapy.  The word has origins in both the Greek and English languages.  The "hippo" part comes from the Greek word for horse, "hippos", and the "therapy" part has an English origin.  Hippotherapy is primarily what we use here at Rocking Horse Rehab.  It can be used to treat a large group of people, including disorders and disabilities from Autism to Cerebral Palsy, and from Low tone to Apraxia.  The tack typically used for hippotherapy is a thin pad on the horse's back in order to maximize the child's input from the horse's movement.  More information on hippotherapy can be found at http://www.americanhippotherapyassociation.org/.

Therapeutic riding is considered a recreational activity, and teaches riding skills to people with a variety of disabilities.  TR is typically used for children that are more high-functioning, with disorders and disabilities such as Down Syndrome, Autism, and learning disabilities.  Therapeutic riding began in Europe in the late 1960's, and quickly became popular in the United States and Canada.  The tack for TR is usually more typical tack that would be used in standard lessons for typical children, such as an English or Western saddle, and sometimes reins are used as well.  More information on therapeutic riding can be found at http://www.pathintl.org/.

Horse of the Month
Chocolate

Chocolate is the newest member of our herd.  He is an 8-year bay mixed breed pony, who stands 13.2 hands tall.  He came to our facility at the beginning of May 2016, and quickly settled in to his new lifestyle.  He is very friendly in his stall and loves to be groomed and cuddled with.  Choco is quickly becoming a good friend to many of our clients.

In addition to being a friend to the kids, Chocolate has also become a friend of the other members of the herd; he enjoys getting turned out with Que or with Small Fry.  Chocolate is a very quick learner and has come a long way in his time here.  We look forward to many more years to come with our new pony!

Staff Member of the Month
Fiana Bezpalko, MS, CCC-SLP

Fiana officially became a part of the Rocking Horse Rehab team in November 2014, after completing volunteer hours as part of the America Hippotherapy Association's certification process.  She started bringing speech therapy to the weekends, which quickly became popular as her schedule filled up.

Fiana obtained her Masters of Science in speech-language pathology at NYU.  In addition to working with RHR, she also works at Celebrate the Children, a special needs school, where she also provides speech therapy.

Between Fiana and Jenn, we have a wonderful team of speech therapists on Sunday who we hope to work with for many years to come!  Thank you Fiana for all you do for RHR!
Hero of the Month
The Kid's Wish Network

Congratulations to Willem for being chosen as a Hero of the Month by the Kid's Wish Network in January 2014 - we are so proud of him. Here's why Willem is our Hero:

Willem is only 8 years old but he has a tough time making friends. He has been diagnosed with Moebius Syndrome, narcoplesy, sensory processing disorder and hypotonia, just to name a few. He has facial paralysis that prevents him from smiling or showing any kind of facial expressions. He is quiet and very shy. In a recent article about Willem published by Autism Speaks, Willem's dad noted that Willem's superpower is his compassion for his family. This is absolutely true, but I'd like to add that Willem's compassion also extends to Que, the horse he loves and rides each week at Rocking Horse Rehab.

Que is an enormous but gentle horse, wonderful with the children in our program. The horse handler that leads Que during riding sessions uses what is called a dressage whip to tickle Que's belly when he needs to start walking. Willem is a gentle rider who speaks in a voice that is barely audible. One day we started the riding lesson without the dressage whip. When I asked a volunteer to get the whip, to the surprise of the three adults around Willem, he said in a strong voice, "I don't want Que whipped - he's a good horse! He's my friend. Don't whip him!" Willem was clearly upset. We quickly clarified that no one was ever whipped here, that it was simply the name of the tool and we explained how it was used. We all agreed it was a scary name so we asked Willem what he thinks we should call it. After some thought, he said, "The Tickler." And that's the only term we use for it now.

This very quiet and shy 8 year old boy had the courage to stand up to three adults when he thought we were going to hurt his horse. He found his inner voice and stood up for what he believed was the right thing to do. His bravery is admirable and I only wish we could all find that inner voice when we needed it. I believe Willem is a hero - he certainly is to his family, to Que and to all of us at Rocking Horse Rehab.
