Families Service Project Supports Bottles for Babies

Campus Ministry has announced its latest Families Service project! Purcell Marian Families have each been given a box of baby bottles and are collecting change, bills and checks (payable to St. Luke) to support Bottles for Babies. This program, a program of Elizabeth's New Life Center, provides positive solutions to unexpected pregnancies.

Each Family will earn points for money collected during the drive, which began November 14 and runs through December 14.  Be sure to support your student's efforts to contribute to this worthwhile cause!

For more information, contact Rob Sander as listed in the flyer (right).

Mrs. Keithley Brings 'Day of the Dead' to Spanish Students

Senora Margarita Keithley has been filling in during Dr. Sanchez (Tito)'s recovery. Recently, they spent some time learning about the symbolism and culture of Day of the Dead.

The calaveras (skulls) that characterize the Day of the Dead are often misunderstood by people who do not know the history of the holiday. The skulls are not intended to be scary, but rather symbolic: The skull represents the death of the body or the passing away of the person, and the decorative designs represent the beauty of their life.

Each student participated in a skull decorating contest. The best Skull WON from each class won a $15.00 Gift Card.

Special thanks to Mrs. Keithley for bringing her energy and enthusiasm to our Spanish students!  The skulls are currently on display in the library.

Mock Trial Team Forming at The Castle!

Every year the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education sponsors a mock trial competition for high school students.  Students in the Cincinnati area have the opportunity to assume the roles of attorneys, plaintiffs, defendants, and witnesses and argue cases before Cincinnati-area lawyers.  Winning teams from those competitions have the opportunity to go on to regional and even state competitions.

Ann Wittenauer, who worked for 15 years as an attorney before returning to her first love, teaching, is working to form a team to compete this year.  If you like to argue AND you are willing to put your heart into it, contact her in Room 27 or via email at annkoizewittenauer@purcellmarian.org.

Mrs. Rosenbauer Takes Biology to the Gardens!

It is that time of the year!
Mrs. Rosenbauer's biology classes were outside last Monday, 11/14 planting tulip bulbs all over the school campus.  These students studied the unusual characteristics of the tulips in class.  Then they were outside planting their own inquiry-based experiment.  They have to wait until spring to see how
their experiments worked.

Something new this year for our biology classes: the Ohio Division of Wildlife asked if our biology students could plant milkweed this fall, as Ohio has been identified as a priority state for monarch butterfly migration.  Monarch butterflies will be stopping in Ohio on their way up to Canada in the summer or on their way south for the winter.   Purcell Marian High School has previously reached out to the ODW to indicate their interest in participating in Ohio Pollinator Habitat Initiative.  We're glad to have finally been chosen!

SAVE THE DATE: Tuesday, November 29 from 6:30 -8:30 in the Centre

Purcell Marian and the Plan the Way Foundation are launching an initiative that aims to enhance the financial literacy and career planning skills of all of our students.  Our presenters are Chris Candelaresi and Brad Cunningham from the Plan the Way Foundation.  This first program is directed to the parents in which an overview of the program will be explained but then a more in-depth presentation on factors and finances that should be considered to help make students' futures possible.  As the program expands, students will be involved in various career exploration opportunities within their Purcell Marian families.  As it continues to develop, Purcell Marian alums and parents will be invited to lend their time and talent as mentors, business shadow hosts etc.  We are very excited to be teaming up with Plan the Way and we hope you will be able to join us on Tuesday night.

Social Skill for Success:
Purcell Marian is in its third three of utilizing the Boystown Well Managed School
Model.  It is a prosocial skill training method emphasizing at least 16 marketable skills for success in school, and the workplace.  This method promotes a common, consistent language and procedure to teach theses social skills that will help all become successful Cavaliers.  We will be highlighting a skill each week.

Greeting Others is the skill of the week.  The steps for Greeting Others are:
1. Look at the person
2. Use a pleasant voice
3. Say Hi, Hello, Good Morning, etc

We have already had this skill of the week this year, but have seen a need to re-focus and re-teach it.   Please visit the parent website for Boystown at http://www.parenting.org . We will be highlighting one of the skills each week in the parent newsletter.

Focus of the Week - Proper Footwear
Please review #5 on page 112 in the student handbook in regards to shoes.  Gym shoes or dress shoes are required.  Shoes must cover the heel and toes of feet.  Flip Flops/sandals and slippers are not permitted.
