I Can't Help You, I Need Help
2017 Theme: Better Together

How many times have you thought to yourself, "this kind of stuff only happens to me"? How many moments have you thought that you were the only one in the world facing this kind of situation? Have you ever pondered the notion that nobody could possibly help you out of the mess you are in? Let's take a moment to consider the possibility that for every need, there is a solution lying in the hands of someone else. Let's try to wrap our heads around the fact that what we are going through has probably been experienced by many, many people before us. Allow your mind to grasp the fact that no one, not one of us are beyond help.

Each of us holds within ourselves passions and gifts that were given to us for a reason. Those things we just innately love to do or are effortlessly good at doing. Whether it's sewing, cooking, organizing, repairing, or calculating numbers with speed and precision. These are the things we can use to offer help in the time of need. When we think of help, we tend to automatically think of money. Often, what people need is your time and perspective. Maybe you are a great listener and you've recently made it through a tough season in your life. Your neighbor is going through a family crisis. On the outside it looks like she needs money, but what she really needs is someone to hear her side of the story and help her figure out her next step. If you took the time to sit with her over a cup of coffee and listen, you would see that her problem was something you faced three years ago. You share your story and it gives her the insight she needs to figure out what to do next. Sometimes the very help someone needs lies within our own experiences and testimonies -- we were created for community, not isolation.

At Rays of Light Philanthropic, we desire to go beyond the surface. We want to use our natural gifts and talents to bring exposure to the needs of those we serve. We want to create connections with people that will allow them to help in a more personal way. When we do our backpack drives we want to see the faces of some of the people we help. When we have our Annual CHRISTmas "Be a Blessing" Gala, we invite the organizations we work with and give them thanks for all they do. The connections we make help garner relationships that can continue to be built beyond our scope. We pray that the children and young adults we support will go out and offer that same support in someone else's life. If we can reach just one person and motivate them to reach out to another, the cycle of help continues.

We need to create an atmosphere where we all use the passions we have to help those around us. An atmosphere with reliable people who commit to their word and are willing to expand their perspective of what they have to offer. If you are great with accounting, offer your advice to the young adults at your church, so they can learn skills to help them in the future. If you are great with kids, offer the parents in your family or neighborhood a free night of babysitting to give them a break. If you are good at sewing, make blankets and hats to give out at the shelters around you or offer sewing classes at your neighborhood recreation center. Whatever your passion is, it can be used as a light in darkness of someone around you. The help you give them, can cause a ripple effect that helps many.

Take some time today and examine your passions and your talents. Ask yourself what you can do to expand your reach. Look deep inside and re-evaluate the life that has been laid before you. You hold within the ability to create change in the lives of those that have been placed on your path. If you find yourself in a place where all you can say is, "I can't help you, I need help myself", go out and share your gifts with someone and you never know, you may just find the very help you have been seeking. None of us can stand alone and all of us have something to offer. Widen your horizon and give yourself credit for who you are. We are all uniquely created to bring something special to the table. Will you step outside of your box today? Will you look at life from a new perspective? I challenge you allow your unique experiences in life to be the blessing that someone else is seeking?

If you would like an opportunity to be a part of our efforts. Come out to our 10th Annual CHRISTmas "Be a Blessing" Gala this year. This event is love in action. It's an amazing evening of music, creativity, and the opportunity to expand your awareness and help us continue to partner with some amazing organizations.
